Pigo might not believe this, but this year, PCMR has upgraded their

grooming to
the point that it is equivalent to DV's. I ski both and I swear, the

grooming
has been unbelievable this year. After years of sloppy grooming, maybe

they
finally figured out that no grooming at all is better than crappy

grooming. I
also heard something about 50 runs groomed every night (not confirmed

since I
haven't counted). Only difference is that boarders are allowed at PCMR and

they
do screw things up by the afternoon (if you believe that boarders are to

blame).

The "best" grooming in the world was never really a concern to me. pcmr's
was always adequate for those fast days. All grooming was pretty much ok
unless it reached the amateurish level of parkwest/wolfmountain/thecrayons.

The biggest problem I see with pcmr grooming these days is all of it that
they do (allow) in the trees and bowls by the two legged groomers. I had the
day off and a ticket to pcmr today. I found other things to do.

I did not see the need for the
combined Alta/Snowbird ticket. One day you ski
Alta, the next you ski Snowbird.

If you have Spring ski conditions I find an advantage to be able to
hit Mineral Basin (back side of Snowbird with a southern exposure and
earlier softer snow) early and then work around to the front of Alta a
little later. May cost an extra $10 or so, depending how you get the
ticket, but you may get an extra hour or so of quality skiing in. If
you are traveling a long way the incremental money may be worth it.

Fred

Great! Thanks for the advice. That's the way I'd use it.
What fabulous terrain...!

I assume by 'two legged groomers' you mean boarders. I can't argue with you
there (although I seem to tollerate them more than you do). My solution is to
use PCMR (& any other Wasatch resort) as a starting point to fan out onto the
adjoining ridges/peaks. There, as you know, you will not find any two legged
goomers. My only complaint now is the alarming increase in the 'bilers and their
utter lack of knowledge/respect for avalanche awareness. I can't tell you how
many of these idiots have highmarked me, creating truely dangerous conditions.

If I wanted to do that I will call the helicopter guys. I have been checking
out the new snowmobiles though. With the new technology they're putting into
them for playing in the powder, they look like a lot more fun.

If a 'biler is at the bottom of a slope and you cut in above him to ski,
aren't you creating a "truly dangerous condition" for him?

Yes. But it seems the backcountry self powered types are more
sensitive to that and actually know the issue. I must say the bilers
are getting better, but.... I'm just glad they're not allowed here.

How much skill is involved in running one? What I envision is a
motorcycle on a wide dirt road that sometimes slopes up and sometimes
down, which is about as easy as it's possible to get. Or maybe like
boating after you've been around the lake once. Is there more?

Wow! That post showed up in a hurry.

Anyway, are snowmobiles not allowed around Solitude?

I saw one yesterday on the backside of Jupiter. He must have accessed the area
from the BCC side, so I guess they must be 'allowed' there. As for me
highmarking a 'biler (or anyone else), it NEVER happens. I simply won't put
anyone else in peril like that. Also, better go buy yourself one of them there
new more powerful 'biles before they outlaw the two-stroke variety (very)soon.

Yours or mine??

No. Only residents to access their property. They can't go past the
watershed gates.

They're allowed on Guardsman's and Mineral Fork. That's it. They just
started enforcing Cardiff .. Thank Gawd. So that's out now.
