Brian M's Big Saturday/Sunday Workout (24 hours Lappe)
Quick report from the 24 Hours of Lappe ...
Rocket fast snow on Saturday, freezing drizzle and wind. Rain overnight with warmer temps, but only slightly slower conditions (with rills and fluoros). I managed 203 km in the first 12 hours before blowing up big time! Hit the sack and didn't crawl out of bed until 7:30. Felt surprisingly good Sunday and racked up another 65 km in the last 4 hours. 268 km is pretty good for 16 hours of skiing, but certainly wish I could have held up to skiing all 24! Story of the weekend was Jussi Piirainen, head coach of the National Team Development Centre in Thunder Bay. Following in the footsteps of Pekka Kemppi, who got this whole 24 hour thing started by skiing 350km solo in 1996. Jussi went out hard (faster than me) and held on strong. He finished up with 387.6 km for 24 hours! Very, very impressive skiing. Cheers, Brian |
