Default Driving to the Tarrentaise

Having driven down to Les Arcs over Christmas I can report that the new
section of road beween Moutier and Aime is now open, albeit, at the
moment, as single carrigeway. It should shave one or two minutes of the
journey time to Bourg st. Maurice.

Incidently it took just over 9 hours to get from Birmingham to Calais
and almost the same time to get from Calais to Les Arcs (5 hours from
arriving in Dover to getting to Calais). Would it not be nice if somehow
we could have fast reliable channel crossings.

We've been puzzling over the point of this section. It is very short,
and doesn't avoid any villages/bottlenecks/seriously twisty bits, so
that it only makes sense if part of a much longer "rapide" dual
carriageway right up to Aime from Moutiers - right now it's - what - a
deviation of a mile, a mile and a half? Then you're right back on the
old N road for a long windy trek into Aime. No signs of any other new
construction starting. Frankly I don't get it. Must have a closer look
at the plans...

Yeah, I was a bit confused as well - it's all very nice, but it doesn't
do much for anyone. I thought maybe it was to help out with the World
Cup in Val, but if they're going to do anything else they're leaving it
a bit late.

Maybe the old road to Bourg was taking such a pounding it wasn't going
to last much longer and resurfacing wasn't going to cut it?

John,

If I'm only hitting Picardy then I use the ferry. If I'm heading for
a six hour drive then I use the chunnel. It's also not weather
sensitive. All in all usually 2 hours max from arriving at Folkstone,
checking in, hitting the toilets/coffee etc to transiting and onto the
motorway from Calais.

Though it hasn't been too bad going out we have a couple of delays at
Calais of over 2 hours using the tunnel. It was this unreliability that
prompted us to go for the ferry again and the first couple of times it
was OK. There appears to be no way to avoid delays.

I had a spell of driving across to France every week for a few months.

I found that on average the ferry was 10 minutes slower than the shuttle and
much, much more pleasant.

Martin
