Gee, I think that Utah is more then 2-3 hours . Hey maybe a little
ride, but Windham does have some really good trails for beginners. And
if you get into skiing, you'll think that's a short trip. Me and my
wife track just about every weekend to VT from NJ. We'll do the
Catskills for day trip and yes we consider it a short trip

Plan a trip out here. I'll have you skiing in about an hour. It will be

on
the easy stuff that will enable you to move up as you get experience (or

not
if that's what you want). But you'll be able to get onto a lift and use

the
trail map to choose the runs you want.

where are you located?
The MAIN reason I like Hidden Valley (well thats all Ive been to) is
that it is close. about 65 miles, 1hour and 20 minutes.

My gf said they go to Windham which she said is 2-3 hours away!
Way TOO far!

lol

Well I'm in Utah. But there's lot's to do here besides ski if you decide to
take a vacation.

I still have trouble linking turns...sometimes I do feel like Im
FORCING my inside leg...like I almost have to lift it because it gets
caught in the snow.

Remember change weights early. This helped me get rid of the habit of
wedging. Once you want to turn the other way, immediately step on to
the uphill leg, and push the heel out to bleed off speed (but still
keeping a little weight on the downhill. and keep it parallel.)

Habit of wedging?

The turn you are descriping is a snowplough turn! just because the ski's are
almost parrallel doesn't change that.

Have you never heard of a "racing wedge"?

Not teaching the Wedge/snowplough is in my opinion almost criminal, you are
removing a tequnique of last resort from the students "toolbag" and putting
the students life at risk.

I thought that sharp turns were better? Like in hockey, I cant
ice skate well, so my turns are wide, while Pros are turning at like
90 degrees.

*Racers* are turning that sharply, but only because that is how the
gates are set, not because it is the best way to get down the slope.

Oic. Yeah, I seem to go down the slope at a 80 degree angle,
while some of the experts go more straight down. Or they do tiny
turns.

Yes. At this stage you will still be skidding all your turns. As you
improve, you will probably start to carve the turns, and then you will
skid down the hill very little.

Thats right, when I do my turn, it does seem like I skid down hill
sideways for like 3 feet before I start to move horizontally.
What do you mean by "carve the turns" ?

Thanks

He's a new skier. The instructors I've talked to in the last few years
are trying to get away from the uphill/downhill terminology. It's quite
confusing as the same ski goes from being the uphill one to the downhill
one in the same turn. They try to use inside/outside ski terminology now
which is much easier for a newbie to understand.

IMO the wedge is a great learning tool. It allows a new skier to feel
stable on the snow as they progress through the learning curve. The
problem arises when someone takes a never-ever leasson, and thinks that
the wedge is how you ski for good.

Transition from the wedge to parallel is not difficult. You move from
wedge to stem chrisies, to parallel. I learned the wedge and was skiing
parallel after about my 3rd time out.

1 thing I learned...probably one of the major things is...dont wear
jeans if you are planning to fall.

I wore jeans (I had nylon pants but didnt wear them) and I feel like 5
minutes into it.

Wear the waterproof pants over the jeans. That's what I do. It keeps you
dry and the extra layer keeps you warm.

A bunch of times I fell on purpose because I felt I was going too fast
and I wasnt good at slowing.
Or people were in front of me, and I cant steer too well.

So basically I wore wet jeans for about 8 hours!

Now I have a sore throat...I hope I didnt catch a cold.

BUT, Hidden Valley was nice, the chicken hill was a bit icy (thats all
I went on)
But it didnt snow here for awhile, so maybe thats why.
But its only about 65 miles away from me, so thats close.

Do you mean "Chicken Delight? I saw the trail map on the web.

What area are you in? You're probably within driving distance of where I
like to ski - Blue Mountain, near Allentown PA. If that's not too far to
drive you should check it out. They've got a beginners trail there called
Paradise, marked specifically for "slow skiing". It's plenty wide enough
for traversing and it's about a mile and a half long. They also have one
of those very easy to get on high speed detachable quads at the bottom.
Plus if you've got an Acme super-saver card you can get $25 lift tickets
at any area Acme for the rest of this season.

Yeah, I thought it would be easy. On the map, its horizontal.
But once I got up there, it wasnt anything like the map.
My gf was suprised too, she thought it was a mid-high level green.

I live in queens NY.

Never heard of it. How does it compare to Windham, Hunter, Hidden Valley?
In terms of lines, cost, people, etc?

Whats that?

We dont even have an Acme supermarket, all we have are Key Food, and Wauldbaums
