Is it to the sideways or somewhat backwards? I mean now advanced skating
techniques not just beginner styles.

It should be FORWARD!
That is, you are pushing to the side, but sliding the foot forward at
the finish to keep the ski moving along with you and to never kick off
a "dead" (i.e. stopped) ski.

The mental image to use is this: Imagine yourself on the center of a
clockface heading towards twelve o'clock. Kick towards 10 and 2
o'clock.

If you kick backwards you will move, but slowly, and you will bog down
on steep V1. Also, you will use way more effort as you "muscle" your
way up the hill. The stronger you are the more likely you are to ski
this way (in my observations doing clinics). The weakest little girls
have the best technique because they have no choice :. You should be
able to V1 up steep hills WITHOUT poles if you have the correct body
position, timing, and kick.

I know my skating is inefficient, but cannot figure out
why. The lessons I have had have not been very helpful.

Who is a good teacher for 50 year old klutz's at Weston?
I believe you ski there...

Yeah, you need a lesson. In the absense of snow, some good videos.
The one that Jenex distributes is good. See the bottom of this page.

I totally agree with Rob. When teachning my friends to ski-skate I
tell them the same thing - push *forward*.

For learning to kick sideways and not back slideboard
is very good.

Learning to kick sideways on skis or rollerskis requires much
more concentration.

30 min. workouts on a slideboard right before skiing or roller skiing
help to get the proper motion when body is not tired and, since
there is not much else, you can concentrate on direction of the push only.
