TR: Ugh, why are first turns so ugly...
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
_ I headed back up to Castle Peak in the Lake Tahoe area again on Saturday Nov 7th. There was probably less snow that the week before, but it was much more solid and heavier. There were a couple inches of fresh on a fairly dense base. Still plenty of rocks and branches to be found, but there were turns to be had in a few spots. _ I had my floppiest boots and skinniest skis, but usually in semi-decent conditions I can manage low angle tele turns on them. Not on Saturday though, I'm not sure whether it was just first day creakiness or fear of trashing my knees on hidden rocks, but I just couldn't get that feeling of being "on" my skis. I was either ahead or behind and mostly on the ground... . _ Things were looking much better as I left, a least above 7K feet there should have been a pretty good sized dump Saturday night. You probably still want to bring your rock skis, but there should be enough snow now to ski some of the less rock strewn slopes. _ Booker C. Hey Booker,
Snow is just starting at Sunday River, Maine, but my ski and snowboard school has had us instructors in dryland training since October 15th. Besides ski-striding up hills and running in the woods, I spend an hour a day (TV news hour, incidently) stretching and working on balance. I'm available to be hired as a personal trainer -- lessons will be free only cost to you will be my expenses. I've actually done pretty well getting ready for ski season this year, but there is no substitute for actually making turns. Even once the season gets really going, I always need at least one practice run to find my center and put it over the skis... _ Booker C. My first turns of the season are usually pretty gruesome. Comes mostly from
my overturning the skis and not relaxing. If all goes well, those initial unaesthetic lines quickly get covered again so that I can put something a bit smoother down the next day. Just spent the last week putting around the perimeter of Alta, finding many nice shots and getting the groove back. Plenty of great snow up there but things can still be a bit boney here and there. Gotta get into that area and enjoy it while I can..pretty soon the resort will open and then that whole area is kaput until Spring. Great to be on the snow again! |
