Nordic does not refer to a language, rather a group of nothern european countries - Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland (as well as a discipline of skiing). Norwegian, Swedish, Danish (Icelandic) like English are Germanic languages. Finnish is something completely different. Icelandic comes from the old norwegian language, "Gammelnorsk". They didn= 't change their language when the norwegian ppoulation changed to a more danish-like during the union with Denmark. No, Norwegian comes from the old Icelandic language that was spoken all over the Nordic countries in the Viking times. The Norwegian language all but disappeared but was resurrected from old local dialects at the end of the 19th century as Nynorsk and from the Danish language spoken in Christiania (Oslo) and other places in East Norway as Bokm=E5l. Icelandic remained more or less intact, the modern version of the Old Icelandic (old Norse) language. |

It was norwegians who discovered Iceland, so icelandic is a newer version of the old Norse language or old icelandic. Yes, and modern Norwegian is a still newer version of the old Norse (or old Icelandic), not "old Norwegian", old Norwegian is not the same as "Old Norse" but old Icelandic is. |

Yes, and modern Norwegian is a still newer version of the old Norse (or old Icelandic), That can be discussed since people here do not think that modern norwegian is a newer version of old norse. They think of them as 2 different languages. A man talking norwegian and a man talking icelandic do not understand each other, although by reading icelandic a norwegian can understand some of it. The other nordic languages (danish and swedish) are much more closer related to norwegian than icelandic or "gammelnorsk". -- Terje Henriksen Kirkenes |

....in an attempt to return the discussion back to the original "tracks"
- here are excellent photos of skiers using the artificial classic tracks: http://skisport.ru/photos/view.php?v=2&uid=1680 |

And, FWIW, Soviet/Russian scientists have a reputation for being able to come up with inventions/novelties that would perhaps never see the light of day anywhere else. The glide comes from the silicon and the grip from the metal, possibly with a little help from electricity - or is this a silly guess that only someone completely unschooled in the natural and engineering sciences would think of? What do the people who=B4ve skied on it say - apart from pointing out the obvious (=3D that 300m is a bit on the short side, if one wants to keep relatively sane)? FWIW in Finland the trend is for more ski tunnels of various designs: http://www.skitunnelvuokatti.fi http://www.lumimaailma.com http://www.vesileppis.fi http://www.kuntoputki.com are in operation and 3-5 more are in stages of planning. The skiing extension is also being extended by building cooled track circuits and storing cannon snow over the summer: for instance in Kontiolahti the season will commence in October: http://www.jaahdytettylatu.fi and there is a similar system in use in Kuortane. Thank you, Anders; finally, a skier talk, not a boring lecture on
Nordic languages. The .ru web site has quite a bit of feedback from people who used the tracks. I'll post a summary tonight. |

Ours would roll up so that a 50yard length could be carried in someones car boot (trunk) and all the lengths could be linked together and pinned to the grass on a school playing field somewhere for out meet. If everyone turnedup with the roll they were looking after then we could make a loop, but for tuition rather than training. They ended their life at an outdoor pursuit centre in exactly the same environment shown in the pic. The grassy centre between the wheel tracks was levelled with sand to produce a smooth glide. I seem to recall we got a better glide if the mesh surface was damped with soapy water from the dishwasher! Mike |
