Doping and Plato: Appearance vs. Reality
there's the PURE skier, and the DIRTY one. but there are two kinds of dirty skiers, aren't there? there is the one who 'appears' pure, and the one who get's caught. it would seem the danger lies in the one who 'appears' pure. The "apparently" pure skiier throws into disarray the whole division of pure vs. dirty. So then we can't tell anymore the difference between what is real and what is faked. Plato warned about this, and it's now apparent all over society. the dirty skier who get's caught is a "good copy" because you can tell that he is not pure. but the 'bad copy' has only external resemblance, you can't tell if he's pure or dirty. Plato warned about such 'bad copies', calling them 'phantasma' or 'simulacra'. It's interesting that way back then Plato saw the nature of trickery and how it was damaging to society, damaging to the distinction between what is real and what is not. are we supposed to celebrate this breakdown(as in the arts) or ward it off (like in elite racing.)
