Tahoe or Mammoth?
Going to California soon, which one should I go to? I'm an intermediate
skier, don't mind a little nightlife, don't want to break the bank. A dorm would be fine, as would be a motel with no smells, no critters and no half-inch gap under the door. Any recommendations? -- --- "Wake up, everybody."--McFadden/Whitehead/Carstarphen |

Stay in Carson City and do both. I wouldn't go to Mammoth if the
weather is bad because visibility and the road is poor. If the weather is nice it's only a beautiful 2 1/2 hour drive from Carson to Mammoth. From Carson you can access any of the Tahoe resorts. The Best Value Inn in Carson is ony $40 a night any night including holidays. |

Much as I don't prefer Heavenly, it's tailor made for someone of your description. Lots of inexpensive food and motels at south shore (I would check the Casinos for deals, though) night life and a large intermediate mountain (now owned by Vail - does anyone else think Vail is out to corner the "intermediate skiing market?") |

LAL, I'll bet there's a growing demand for intermediate skiing. The Baby Boomers have hit 60. That means we're all 40+ or something like that. Sounds like a population that is going to start backing off a little as a simple function of the aging process and deteriorating health. If that's what VAIL is doing, it's probably going to be a winning strategy if my theory is right. |
