Default GoreTex jackets

I'm in the market for a waterproof shell, for use skiing and
hillwalking. Having bought several mid-range jackets (50-100GBP) over
the years, and getting tired of their drawbacks (heavy, bulky,
non-breathable), I have decided to splash out and get something in
GoreTex.

A friend recommended PacLite, but having tried a few such jackets on in
shops, they don't seem as robust as standard GoreTex XCR - it feels
like a few tumbles on icy slopes might damage the fabric. Does anyone
have any opinion on this?

I've looked at quite a few jackets, and so far my favourites have all
been Berghaus. Being quite tall and skinny, they seem to fit me better
than other brands, many of which seem pretty baggy. The hoods also
seem well designed in terms of protection and movement. One jacket
which I'm particularly interested in - but can't find in any shop - is
the Pro Sports XCR. Has anyone got any experience with this jacket, or
know of any reviews/further info I could get hold of?

Any information / suggestions appreciated.

Marmot makes some good gore-tex shells that work for skiing and stuff,
I would recommend that you get your hands on some sort of soft shell.
I am hunting for one this weekend for this nutty Colorado weather.

I highly recommend the Marmot Precip jacket. It's lightweight,
water/windproof, inexpensive and is perfect for layering. Good
ventilation when needed, good hood. I pretty much mothballed my other
jackets and wear this one for almost everything.

Some of my friends are sponsored by Marmot. Marmot sponsor's Exum Mountain
Guides as well. It's good stuff. I'm sticking with Mountain Hardwear.

I have one but never thought of using it for skiing. Do you use it on a
regular basis or just for wet weather days

When (snow) skiing I use it almost exclusively. For the two seasons I
had it in Colorado I skied probably 150 days in it (out of ~180). The
other ones were primarily when I was without a jacket, or in my camo.
I'm big into layering and all the (amazing) synthetics for insulation,
so I really just need a wind and water barrier on the outside. For
most days I wear a capilene t-shirt, a fleece pullover and the Precip.
If I zip the fleece and the jacket up all the way I keep plenty warm
for a lift-ride, and I have no trouble keeping warm while hiking or
skiing - that's for sure!

I use mine for hiking and kayaking.

I hike in mine too. I even work (construction) in it. Mine's
definitely lost a lot of the white gore-texy stuff on the inside, but
it's seen very, very heavy use for 5 years.

Not enough pockets and zippers and such for me to use while skiing plus the
older one I have is just a regular jacket length. I think the offer a longer
version now.

You're carrying too much stuff. (Kidding!) My jacket is regular
length I guess - I keep the drawstring on the bottom snugged so it sits
tight around my waist. That way it keeps the wind and the snow out.

I have the pants too and together they are great on the trail or when a
storm blows up while on the water.

Haven't tried them - but I need a new pair of wind pants. Most of the
others I've tried have been way to hot for me. Maybe I'll spring for
them.

I'm a layering type as well. The shell is for wind mostly since I don't
bother skiing in the rain anymore and I have to shy away from powder these
days.

I'm warm blooded too. Almost always a zip front thermal long sleeve t from
REI.

Marmot fleece jacket with pit zips wide open and an off brand Gore Texy type
shell with roll down hood. Most days I ski with the t zipped down and I
swear I can feel the heat rising some days.

I'll only wear the pant in the rain or snow. Too hot otherwise. I once tried
snowshoeing in them and after a quarter mile was stripping on the trail.
Love the way the jacket and pants pack way down small.

Some of my friend's are sponsored by Marmot, too. Amazing how much great
Marmot stuff I have. Including my everyday ski outfit, top of the line. I
swear by it: tough, bulletproof, and the best warranty in the biz.
