The background wind speed would need measuring like you say, and for
the most part, it isnt that windy once you are off the peaks and in the

In a tuck, and held in the hand, it will be in clean airflow so should
give an accurate reading.

So you're going to be in a tuck, going hell for leather, in the trees?

I suspect it's all nugatory anyway as you sound like the kind of

all like that once.

Been skiing of all things. Fancy that! Now got 5 weeks of courses and
then a change of job. Hopefully get another two weeks out of this season
but boring stuff like family and work might get in the way :O(

Not in the trees as in off piste, on a tree lined piste (but only if it
was too windy up top)

Yes we were too, but skillfully came home to Italy just before the big
dump last week. Still, it's supposed to snow here (in the hills behind
San Remo at 400m), so the local resort (Limone should be loooking good
for a quick mid(next)week jaunt...

And how do you suppose you are going to do that?

If you cant work it out for yourself then you must be stupid.

No it can't and it varies around every corner and undulation.

Given averaged readings it can.

You can ignore my somewhat specialist advice

If you are only a 'somewhat' then I will definitety ignore whatever you
spout.

GPS is better

Did you read the other postings on this thread about rogue readings,
and signals bouncing off valley walls?

Never heard of that technique, is it one of yours?

To calibrate it you need to have a defined measurable quantity to
compare. You won't have any at sea level or 1000m.

Averaged reading are a lot less accurate than you'll get from a GPS and
they are prone to change.

Standard protocol for a gobbing off know nothing when presented with
hard evidence or someone better qualified.

Rogue readings are more likely in built up areas and are quite rare in
the mountains unless you are skiing through gorges. Extremely unlikely
anywhere where you would be doing a "tuck".

Spacker technique, limited intelligence and kindergarten repartee.
Sounds like you'd better take a bumper supply of tissues on your trip
with you. Or some chloroform.
You came here for some information because your understanding was
somewhat limited. You have ignored all that you have been given and
think you know better. It's a long way down sonny, particularly when
you've burnt your bridges. Enjoy your skiing.

No, it means he can't see how *you* are going to do this.

If you have the means to do so, then you would be unlikely to be
buying a £30 wind speed meter to calculate your speed.

You really think so?

Obviously, since he clearly knows a lot more than you.

Sorry to change the tone slightly but I'd like to thank you all for one of
the most enjoyable threads I've read for some time.
