Default Beckie gets silver

Just watched the tail end of CBC converage of Beckie's medal ceremony in
Calgary. She got silver, was very gracious about it, and said something to
the effect that "...it's still not over", but that likely refers to the
whole doping issue, and not just the medal issue. Everyone in the place
knows that she should have the gold. At least in this ceremony, she was on
the top step.

It's really quite interesting that they awarded her the silver medal
while the CAS is still deciding whether to give her the gold. After
1 1/2 years, you'd think they might wait a week or two to hear the
outcome of the CAS case. But ... maybe she really does want to win
(at some point in time) all three medals for the same race :-)!

Regardless of the CAS, it's a gold medal in my books.

Having attended a small gathering of fans, well wishers in
Vancouver,B.C. last night. I had ask the question regarding the silver
medal ceremony at this time and the reply (correctly) from a CNST
(Canadian National Ski Team) member was that Beckie was awarded the
Silver medal at this time and a ceremony is in due order, regardless
of the decision of a gold medal to be awarded later, possibly, at the
end of this month. The gold medal ruling could be in two weeks or it
could be in another year, depends on the IOC. Besides, the CNST is
going to be on thier way to Alaska for training in th next few days
and all of them may not even be here for the next ruling.
Surely, one doesn't expect a medal winning, Olympic athlete just
awarded a medal to just pick it up from the post office and go home?

A gold medal winning Olympian expects to stand on the top of the podium and
hear her national anthem played in the presence of her fellow competitors
and in front of the world media. The druggies have denied this to Beckie
and no after the fact ceremonies can ever compensate fully.

Beckie might even set a new Olympic record. The only person in any sport to
win bronze, silver and gold medals in the same race.

Also, let's not forget the rightful silver and bronze medal winners who did
not even get to stand on the podium at Salt Lake City.

If there is any good to come out of this, the IOC can make a definite ruling
that when an athlete takes the Olympic oath to compete fairly it applies to
the whole games and if that athlete cheats, all results are forfeited and
the rightful winners will be rewarded before the games end.
