Salt Lake City w/ alpine events in Park City/Snowbasin. Does/Did not get any
better than that: great snow, great terrain, great venues, great crowds, great
enthusiasm, great party. Thank god it only lasts two weeks though.

Agreed. Anywhere but here. The Olympics just takes public money and
wastes it on spectator sports. If there's anything that doesn't need to
be subsidized on the public dole, spectator sports is it.

Fortunately, the chances of the Olympics coming to Detroit is
vanishingly small. Unfortunately, our lousy professsional sports teams
still manage to extort new stadia out of us on a regular basis.

Seems less likely than hosting the Winter Olympics.

The city that offers the biggest bribe :-P

Seriously I would look for:
1. Good access for spectators (both in terms of the roads not being
totally clogged up and in it being close enough to at least one major
city for day trippers.

2. A reasonably compact area to hold all the events

3. Likely good conditions for events. They had great trouble
finishing the ski events in Sapporo as the visibility often poor. I'm
not sure if they were just unlucky or if this was normal for the time
of year.

4. Facilities that will continue to be used after the olympics (eg Ski
jump, ice rinks with space for several thousand spectators)

5. A bid that looks as if they will be able to do what they say on
time and at least close to budget

As I live in Scotland where the ski resorts currently hardly have a
run open (and this is normal) I can't expect to have a winter olympics
near me. Places like Whistler, Innsbuck and indeed Turin fit the
first 2. I am not sure on the 3rd (would also depend on when it is).
The 4th and 5th can not be answered until a bid is formed (I don't
know how the Turin 2006 bid fares on this).

If they did it at Pine Knob they could use the ampetheater too!
