But many of the comments in SR waxroom and other publications
mention Mr Miller's partying most of the other athletes do not do
it publicly.
But when he made the drug comment earlier in the season he put on
the bulls eye and walked out in front of a few FIS target shooters,
anything to discredit the americans!
I am planning to watch the interview, more comments to follow.

Remember that it's the same show/network that tried to influence a
presidential election with false documents = zero credibility. Maybe
they should be kbs?

Is he going to talk about the article I read in the paper today where he
thinks it's really cool to ski (and race) drunk?

Janet

The snips I've read have him talking about how he's done it, not how he
"thinks it's cool".

My bet is that Bode drunk is in more control than 100% of the borders and
80% of the skiers out there.

Bode is not responsible for anyone else's behavior. Period. Still, it's a
shame when role models, whether they want to be or not, promote negative
behavior through their actions and words that will influence young malleable
minds. In the adult world, I'm sure the moment will be truly uneventful,
but the teens and twenty-somethings are probably going to process this
moment for the season. I'm also sure that Bode is safer on skis or a board
drunk than I am in a lift line sober!

But when you are the focus of the media glare and try to exploit it for
your gain there are things as a role model for youths you do not want to
come out. May be if you write a tell all book 30 years after the fact but
it can be a sponsor & future project killer if you do it during your
prime.

I'm not disputing that. I'm just correcting what the agenda driven said.

As far as role models are concerned, if the parents can't teach kids the
difference, **** 'em. I think that just because he skis well he shouldn't
be able to live his own life to make up for some retards poor parenting
skills. But he also should be aware of marketing pressures that make
negatively effect him (right or wrong).

I am reading the Bill Johnson book and wondering if Bode used him as a
role model?

Bill is a cool guy. But I haven't seen him since the brain injury.

Pigo, As a former teen and a current parent, I've learned that what
influences my kids from middle school on is their peers and not their
parents. We still have to teach by example, and our efforts will be
rewarded later, but it's a fact that teens buy what their peers are selling
before even considering what their parents are selling.

See my other post, if you want, where I stated emphatically, that Bode is
not responsible for anyone's behavior other than his own. It's his choice
whether to serve as a positive role model, or not.

Hmm, that's about the third different spin I've heard on it. And kind of
surprising, too. I mean, c'mon -- the World Cup mostly takes place
in Europe, where as near as I can tell the drinking "age" is "tall
enough to see over the bar," and where Bode got (besides his prize money)
his weight in local wine when he won some race last year. I
have a hard time believing the FIS is having people blow into balloons
post-race, except if they're looking to decorate the party venue. I mean,
it's _post_ race, and that is...uh...Miller time.

Cleve finish!

Not exactly original. But I mean, come on -- the reality is that Europe
has a different culture WRT alcohol than the United States. Even if
Bode raced every race ****faced, he wouldn't get pilloried in Europe
because they don't care about people being ****faced like we do, and he
wouldn't get pilloried in the United STates because people would say,
"Who's Bode Miller?"

In other words, a non-story about something that probably never happened.

The promo run for the news story was more exciting than the story itself.
They showed a bunch of his crashes and focused on how often he DNF's
I heard a few different excerpts on WCBS radio, from he does not care
about winning gold and the drunk episode was the race after he won the
overall title. They showed him under the influence of last nights
partying after the overall win. The video show's him a little shaky
leaving the starting gate.
But his answers were typical bode responses with no definitive answers

Text is on the CBS website under 60 minutes; I've got the link around
somewhere if anyone wants it and can't find it.

I think so....
What paper? Is there a url for the article?

michael

It was in the Star-Ledger (the paper is out of Newark, NJ -
starledger.com). Unfortunately their web site is not very useful w/o a
subscription. Supposedly one can search the 14-day archive w/o a
subscription, but it doesn't find everything - I think they only really
allow a sub-set of the archive to be searched. I typed in "bode miller"
as the search and the only article that came up was something from Jan
1st about the Jets-Bills game.. go figure... If I can find the actual
newspaper article, I can quote it here. (But I think it may already have
gone with the recycling)

That's a pretty radical misrepresentation.

listening to WCBS in NYC traffic they basically summed up the Sunday
night story as he hoped he would not get disqualified in post race
tech for being drunk.

Hmm, that's about the third different spin I've heard on it. And kind
of surprising, too. I mean, c'mon -- the World Cup mostly takes place

The article I read it wasn't about a post-race party. If they want to
party *after* the race, that's thier perogative. But in the article, he
was *racing* drunk, not getting drunk at a post-race party. And the way
it was written (maybe it was a mis-representation), Bode thought it was
cool to race drunk.

But the story in Boston Globe was he was shocked that it was being
presented that way. He has failed to realize how the media will
distort from his meaning every statement he makes. You repeat the
shock statements and forget to air the clarifying statements.

To be fair, this didn't happen for the past three years, because between
Olympic years, ski racing is invisible in the USA. Now the stiffs at
the major media sports desks are all waking up and saying, "Uhhh, okay,
anyone wearing the red white and blue gonna win anything in this one?
Okay let's go dig up something interesting about 'em." So I guess it is
quite sudden for him.

You know what's weird? The last time I was in Europe, they were
starting to ask for ID's. I'm not sure what age they were checking
for. I just noticed it.
