Serre Chevalier : Monnetier or Chantemerle ?
I hesitate between Monnetier les bains (Auberge du Choucas) or Chnatemerle (Hotel Plein Sud). Any advice about the choice ? Snow in december, accessibility for beginners, activity (Chantemerle seems more afyive and Monnetier more traditional). If anyone has stayed in thiese places, I would appreciate some hints... Thank you very much François |

Monétier remains a village-style resort and at 1700 is more snow sure. All the resorts face north though, so other than very early and late in the season there's usually no problem. The resorts are linked of course, but for immediate access to the best snow, highest vertical drop and range of runs I would opt for Monétier. Fraid I haven't stayed in the hotels you mention. Pete |

Thank you very much François Snow in December in Serre Chevalier is inconsistent, though they have enough this year judging by the web site As a place Monetier seems more attractive than Chantmerle it has a more traditional village feel. I have always stayed in Briancon though. The beginners slopes at Monetier are at the bottom of the lifts (1500m) whereas in Chantmerle they are at the half way station (1800m), in the depths of winter you will get a little more sun skiing at Chantmerle and the slopes may be less icy. The slopes at Monetier are also more exposed to the very cold winds that sometimes blow down the valley. If taking lessons in Chantmerle I would go for one of the international skischools rather than the ESF as their classes are always crowded, in Monetier class sizes seem more reasonable. If by other activities you mean ski de fond Monetier is excellent, it also has hot springs for bathing in. With a family I do not go in much for apres ski so cannot comment. Auberge de Choucas looks fine from the outside but I have stayed in neither. Hope this helps Bob |
