It takes a lot of snow, followed by enough clear weather to do avalanche
control, to open Heather. Even in 2001-2002, it didn't open till
around Christmas.

Open to these folks about 4 weeks earlier than that. Of coures, you'd
be on your own as far as evaluating avy risk. So if I were going, I'd
want someone who's got some experience in that going along .

Way to get tweaked. His phone number area code is for Salt Lake City.
So that'd be Region 1 NTSC. On the internet, if someone's speaking
english, using the $ symbol, and doesn't say where they are, it's a
safe bet they're in the US.

erm...way to get it wrong.

So you know it's SLC...local knowledge ? And to my knowledge the
following countries all use 'dollar' as their currency.

East Caribbean Dollar
Zimbabwe Dollar
Australian Dollar
Bermudan Dollar
Brunei Dollar
Bahamian Dollar
Belize Dollar
Canadian Dollar
Fiji Dollar
Guyana Dollar
Hong Kong Dollar
Jamaican Dollar
Cayman Islands Dollar
Liberian Dollar
New Zealand Dollar
Solomon Islands Dollar
Singapore Dollar
Trinidad&Tobago Dollar
New Taiwan Dollar

Beknighted? never seen that word before... do you mean "benighted" -
existing in a state of intellectual, moral, or social darkness

I pretty much think everyone "knew" that the original poster was an
American (hence US dollar, Region 1, NTSC), but were irked because
other English speaking countries (Canada, England, and Australia, etc)
are implicitly ignored by the original poster.

I mean first there was the telephone number... look at the grouping of
digits in the phone number (3-3-4)... that is only found North America
I believe (where as England and Australia both have a 3-4-4 pattern) I
mean who else but an "American" would forget to include his country
code? Elementary... my dear Watson.

Seriously... do you think the guy is selling snowboard video tapes
from Bermuda (in Bermuda dollars?) Over half of the nations you listed
at tropical islands! Again like phone number... anyone "aside" from an
American would have listed CND, AUS, NZD, etc instead of $ when
posting a for sale posting on an international forum.

Despite what you and other people might want this newsgroup to be
like, the United States is the de facto (from Webster's dictionary -
being such in effect though not formally recognized) standard on this
forum. I'm not saying that this is also what is "should" be, just that
it is the way it is. I mean why is "World Series" of baseball
comprised of all but two American teams... when there are at least a
couple of hi-caliber teams out there in the rest of the world.

just to set a few things straight from the schmuck himself...:

yes, i'm in salt lake.
yes, i'm american (well kinda, but thats another story).
yes they're region 1(usa) dvd's, and finally... yes i'm asking for
payment in american dollars.

and no, i'm not going to get into a flame war with peeps about posting
snowboard movies to rec.skiing.snowboard. i thought that a cross
posting, especially at this time of year (ie, near preseason) about
some snowboard movies would be acceptable, but alas... i was wrong.
forgive me dear faq-owner. it won't happen again. i promise.

i had forgotten just how many usenet peeps have nothing better to do
than wait for someone to do something that violates some ambigious
standard of usenet acceptance, and then excitedly pounce on them,
proving how much more usenet savvy they are, and really... how dull
witted i must be. i will go back to *NOT* reading
rec.skiing.snowboard as you've successfully defended it at the price
of usability. in fact, i think i will go snowboard (or at least hike
10420).
ciao

Who made this right/wrong?

So you know it's SLC...local knowledge ? And to my knowledge the

I didn't list 'dollar' as a single and unabigious differenciator. In
fact I said '$' symbol. It's been my experience that those using
dollars other than US, tend to use symbols such as '$CAN' or otherwise
specify that they're referring to the less common currency. For
example, people generally understand 'franc' and 'pound' to refer to
French Francs and United Kingdom Pounds, even though these same names
are used for other curriences in Belgium (franc), Switzerland (franc),
Egypt (pound), Lebanon (pound) and elsewhere.

The sun *does not* rise and set on your much beknighted shores.

I'm quite aware of that. In fact, I'm possibly the least isolationist,
nationalist or imperialist American you might meet. I understand the
sentiment behind your's and other's posts, and in general agree with
it. America is the new imperialist, much in the same mannor as the
classic British Empire, and in general this a lot of harm to the world
some people here in the states don't consider. But perhaps you should
take a step back and realize that assuming you know my beliefs and
attitudes based merely on the fact that I'm an American is just as
small minded. And doing it with a "it's hip to be cynical" attitude is
just @#$%ing dumb. Those of us who live here in the States and have
what is currently the minority opinion soon tire of other people
putting their beef on us. We're not all redneck assholes who want to
nuke the world folks.

Back to the original rabbit...

What I specificly said was:

If
1. a person doesn't specify location
2. speaks english
3. uses the $ symbol
It's a good bet they're American.

In other words, based on those clues, it was a reasonable assumption
that the guy was American. I'm very thankful the original responder
maintains a faq, as well as manages the group. But, jumping on some
schmuck who just posted a for sale ad with all that cynical attitude
rubbed me the wrong way, as did your response to my post. I admit my
previous response and this one are just as pointless and abrasive.

This whole exchange is so totally proof that we have to much time and
not enough snow.

In Europe, the only country that is using francs is Switzerland.
Therefore francs should always be understood to be Swiss francs.

Only since the Euro rolled out.
