Take passport if returning via cable car - there are random checks! I don't think so. Since both Italy and Switzerland are signatories of the Schengen agreement, passports are not required to cross the border. I've been stopped twice. Recently? There is an office for the Caberini at the bottom of the cable car that takes you back to Zermatt. Carabinieri, I presume is what you mean. Who are not, as far as I'm aware, normally responsible for border controls. I'm intrigued as to what they were doing. Once I did not have any proof of ID apart from a credit card, so I had to wait whilst my details were entered on some log. Right, so it's ID they're after, not a passport to cross the border as such. Still sounds wierd though. As it happens, I don't normally use the cable car to get back anyway, always preferring the fast linked chair lifts further round. -- Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |

(I think tha's what is on the office door) Once I did not have any proof of ID apart from a credit card, so I had to wait whilst my details were entered on some log. Right, so it's ID they're after, not a passport to cross the border as such. Still sounds wierd though. On the 2nd occasion I asked why they were making these checks. The response was "It's work!" -- Michael Chare |

Switzerland have signed the agreement, but not yet implemented it. Actually none of the states which signed the agreement in 2004 (13 of them) have yet implemented it, although all but Cyprus, Switzerland, Romania and Bulgaria are due to do so on 31st December 2007 (overland and sea borders, later for air travelers). -- Alex Heney, Global Villager No one ever said "if I'd only spent more time in the office" To reply by email, my address is alexATheneyDOTplusDOTcom |
