board cleaner before waxing?
So, I started waxing my own gear last year. Long overdue. Great
results. Enjoy doing. Etc. Etc. Some of the tuning gear I bought came with this citrus based cleaner that works great to pull dirt and other old wax and crud out of the base before I apply a new wax coat. Thing is, a can of this stuff, when labeled specifc for tuning, is expensive. I think I asked this last year and the response was "any non-chemical citrus based cleaner will do the job." Thing is, I can't find anything. Oh, don't get me wrong, citrus cleaners are IN and every other cleaner in the store smells like f*cking oranges...heck, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a citrus-based cleaner, but, they all seem to have detergents included as well. ? So, know place I can buy any 100% citrus cleaners on-line that are healthy for my base? Thanks - I know they're out there, but I'm not sure which ones are good for my equipment based on their other cleaning ingredients. Have great rides this weekend, -todd |

I have a bottle of the stuff, but I barely use it and do warm wax scrapes instead. But I could be misinformed. |

But I could be misinformed. a "light", gentle cleaning with something citrus based should be fine but I wouldn't overdo it on my base either. I tend to use a citrus solution anywhere I see some brownish spots to help loosen the gunk off and give a quick wipe near the edges before a "warm scrape" like you refer to (hair dryer + scraper works great for that), and before adding a new fresh coat of wax. anyway, I think there is some spray orange cleaner out there that's really common but I can't remember the name of it. it's probably in every supermarket or mass merchant from here to Uzbekistan but for the life of me can't think of the name right now. there are also specialized base cleaners out there (as the OP mentioned) if you're worried about cost, I'd say shop around and maybe find a cheaper one that works just as good? if all else fails, maybe a diluted solution of inexpensive Simple Green to remove any dirt, and then a quick wipe down with water (followed by "warm" scraping) would help. I'll give it a try and see if that does anything on my old board. to me, using a base cleaner is for getting out any dirt or grime moreso than old wax, but maybe cuz I board in some slightly skanky snow I dunno :-) bri -- * enjoying the karma * remove LKJSDFJSD from address to email |

Try a janitorial supply. I got my last bottle at a Home Hardware [not home despot] It's called "orange apeal" Get a 100% concentrate. Citrus based cleaners can leave lots of chemical residue. Use them on glass and you'll see how much residue. Use a scraper first after warming the wax to take off the bulk of the wax. Cam http://www.CoastalBC.com/ http://www.SurfingVancouverIsland.com/ |
