Yes indeed, Bode -- and Daron, and Lindsay Kildow, and a whole lot of
other boys and girls, let's not be forgetting.

Sniplet from the SR article, which is at

GREATEST DAY IN AMERICAN DOWNHILL HISTORY
By Nathaniel Vinton
December 03, 2004

Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves took the top two places in the Birds of
Prey downhill today, while Lindsey Kildow won the women's World Cup
downhill in Lake Louise. With a handful of other Americans cracking the
top 20 at both venues, it is the greatest single speed performance in
the history of the U.S. Ski Team.

My brother was actually AT this race. I told him he better take a ton
of pictures.

Bryon Friedman finished seventh for the men, a surprisingly good finish.
Bode now leads the men's overall, with 480 (!!!) points. Michael
Walchhofer overtook Hermann Maier for second place with 195 points;
Maier is third with 194. Daron is solidly in fifth with 184 points,
ahead of Didier Cuche with 121.

As for the women, Kildow wasn't the only surprise: the second US woman
was perennial crash-and-burner Caroline Lalive, with a 9th place finish,
hopefully on her way to a year of good finishes after years of hard
luck. Julia Mancuso was 15th, and the two who could have been expected
to do best for the US women, Jonna Mendes and Kirsten Clark, were 19th
and 20th, respectively. When was the last time the US women put five in
the top 20? Have they ever????

It's my contention that on a team without an official captain, Bode is
fulfilling the role by psychologically pulling his team up with him. If
they can stay healthy, the US squad is going to be roaring on high flame
when they get to the Worlds.

(prediction: both Hermann Maier, who finished 10th, and Carole
Montillet, who finished 2nd, will have something to say about why the
race was bogus)
