Default Best place to live and snowboard?

My family is tentatively planning a move.

We currently live in Tahoe, and we want to move someplace where
there's as much opportunity to snowboard or more at comparable or
better resorts.

Bear in mind that we are middle class people--so I'm guessing Jackson
Hole or Vail is out. However, I don't think we'll have any trouble
finding decent jobs.
Good schools would be nice, too.

So, if it was all open to you, where would you go? And why?

Yeah, I was thinking your in a good spot now. But, in Colorado you would
probably want to consider living somewhere in Summit County. You would have
access to all the great mountains from that area. Or, Breckenridge is
awesome cause the town is nice and so are the people. The cost of living
probably isn't that bad either. Next, Steamboat would be a great choice.
The mtn is incredible and the people are great also. It's far enough away
from the front Range mtns you don't get to many annoying people getting in
your way. But, it gets a little colder in the Boat then the other places.
Funny thing, I was almost debating on going out to Live where you are now.
But, I think I'll try and make it out next season to see how it is first..

How about Milton Keynes?

Its right in the heart of England, good for jobs, schools and local
amenities, well connected to the motorway network and, best of all, you will
have even more opportunity to snowboard than in Tahoe as you can ride year
round day or night.

Seriously, haven't you got it all already? Pity us snow starved Brits who
have to travel hundreds of miles to the mountains.

I agree, why go anywhere else?

You've got a great assortment of resorts, and a season that typically runs
through Memorial Day.

I live near Mt Hood, we have a longer season than you do (sometimes year
round) but nowhere even close to the variety of terrain you have.

Salt Lake City would be another option if you want a chance of scenery or
lower living expenses.

That suprises me... seemed like a pretty affluent area to me. Maybe that's
the reason.

Looked like it could get really really hot in the summer though. It was
pretty hot in March, one week after it was snowing!

Well...I moved to Salt Lake almost a year ago and have been pleased so
far. Sure, the Mormon thing can be a little wierd but other than that
it is a great place. I was able to get in 35+ days of boarding in
this year at a handful of different resorts. The champagne powder is
a lot of fun, better than any other resort I've been to in the U.S.

The schools are squeaky clean white, which can almost be a bad thing
because there is little diversity. But the crime rate seems low. The
job market isn't exactly on fire, but being a large metropolis, SLC
offers big city jobs within 45 minutes of the slopes.

Growing up in Houston, I really can appreciate living here. Don't
have to worry about getting carjacked anymore. Again, the Mormon
thing can be pretty strange, but you just have to find people with
your same interests. SLC has the same things as every other city
(bars, strip clubs, etc..), just less of them.

Bend, OR is another place.
Its a town on 60,000 people with a college there. It's the high desert
so they don't get as much rain but plenty of powder.

True!

Bend is probably more reasonably priced that Tahoe, and has an equally long
season (generally through Memorial day, and Timberline is a 2.5 hour or so
drive during the summer), but remember that there's only one resort, Mt
Bachelor. It doesn't have the extreme steeps and variety that you'll find
at Squaw for example. However season passes are quite reasonable, I think
in the $800 range.

My family moved from the Bay Area to the Mt Hood area so that we could live
right near snowboarding. We also happen to have family in the area which
tipped the scales, but if we were to make the choice all over again, Tahoe
might have gotten stronger consideration. We really miss riding there.

A 1 mtn pass for $800 is reasonable? Maybe about 5-10 years ago here in
Colorado that was reasonable. Now that is extremely HIGH. Another good thing
about Colorado is you can get the Colorado Pass for around $320 and that
gives you 5 Mountains, including; Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone
& A-Basin. You can't beat that deal!! Granted, the Denver job market sucks I
thought you would be living in the mtns and working a mtn job. You can check
out www.snow.com for more info on the Pass. Good stuff. And, where is the
original poster @ anyways?
