Free Skiing at Crested Butte
CB snow isn't the best at the start of the season, but with snowmaking
the area hopes to have 3 lifts running for the return of free skiing. If that happens, there'll be skiing in Paradise, good crusiing, along with a couple of the front side green runs open. BTW, the snowmakers at CB do a good job. It used to be an exciting time at CB, and I hope it is again. The area could use some excitement. Any changes yet? -- ant The new owners have spent money on the mountain improving snowmaking, doing a better job of grooming, and generally spiffing up the neglected facilities. But at heart (my opinion) they are Real Estate investors and are very busy trying to earn a healthy return on their investment. Others jumped in so there has been lots of building that gets in the way of skiing and skiers. For instance the base lodge with it's cafeteria, bar and event floor (hosted everything up to and including fight nights) was removed in September. For this season it'll be an empty lot. After a year or two a new building with high end condos in it will be its replacement. Most of the improvements announced involve new buildings, but the new owners did get Teocali Bowl open after all these years and the repalcement of the East River Triple with a quad speeded up getting back in rotation after skiing the North Face. They do hope to build, replace, or realign some lifts. Some trails may be realigned too. Snodgrass Mtn. may get lifts soon, but the big plan there is a new residential development. If everything planned gets built, Mt. CB could be bigger than Gunnison, the county seat. If you don't mind putting up with heavy duty construction at the base of the mountain (and soon on the mountain as a new restaurant is supposed to go up near the top of the Red Lady lift), it's still a good ski area. For some of us it's a great ski area. Jack |

Just take a look at Blokemo in VT if you want to see what they do: "The Muellers have a track record of success, turning a troubled Okemo ski area in Ludlow, Vt., into the second-busiest resort in New England. Homesite and condominium prices around Okemo have more than doubled since 1997 when the Muellers accelerated a golf and ski expansion." I don't see how they can turn CB into a cruiser hill, though. Is there enough of that kind of terrain? Dave |

How/where's the parking situation? H. R. (Bob) Hofmann CBMR finally noticed the parking lot was a mess and have decided to chip seal it. That's short term. Long term the parking lot will be covered with expensive lodging and a water sports facility. Parking will be underground and probably reserved for the expensive lodging as it won't be managed by CBMR. Basically there won't be a parking lot. As to more blue cruisers, Snodgrass is the areas answer to that. Nice South facing blue runs. South facing may or may not work out. Oh yeah, the new housing and commercial development planned there will not have a parking lot either. My guess is the Muellers hope to change the place into a quasi- exclusive resort for owners of million dollar units, each of which comes with its own heated underground parking. Valet parking of course. Jack |
