You could hitch a ride on one of the many tour operator buses going to Geneva airport on Saturdays and Sundays, then train from there. There are also scheduled bus services between Courchevel and Geneva airport, but they are not cheap http://www.rail.ch/pv/index_e.htm for train timetable and prices http://www.gva.ch/en/transport/tpublics2.asp for bus timetables -- Marco Cattaneo | | XYZ = freesbee |

Courchevel to Zermatt
Zermatt is in a car-free zone. The public road ends at Täsch railway
station. All visitors including the very rich have to come by train. Hope that helps a little bit Turan |

We will not have a car. Can anyone recommend the best way of getting from Courchevel to Zermatt? I don't think you can do it in one day without a car. You must at least take a bus from Courcheval to Moûtiers. Then from Moûtiers to Geneva, you can either take a bus or a train. Then from Geneva, you can take regular Swiss trains to Brig. Then from Brig you get on the special train to Zermatt. |

Except you then go on to show how it _can_ be done. You must at least take a bus from Courcheval to Moûtiers. Then from Moûtiers to Geneva, you can either take a bus or a train. The only train services from Moutiers to Geneva go via Albertville, Lyon or even Milan, so you're looking at a minimum five hour trip. Bus services are about three hours, IIRC. Then from Geneva, you can take regular Swiss trains to Brig. Then from Brig you get on the special train to Zermatt. The swiss railway site, www.sbb.ch is very useful, and shows the following connections: Station Date Arr. Dep. Thanks Richard Going off the Swiss railways information site (http://www.sbb.ch/pv/index_e.htm) it looks possible to get from Moutiers to Zermatt by bus and train in 8 or 9 hours. ___ Michael MacClancy |

"Richard and Barbara" wrote in message ... We will not have a car. Can anyone recommend the best way of getting from Courchevel to Zermatt? Thanks Richard snip As everyone else has written, Geneva to Zermatt is straightforward and the Swiss Federal Railways site (www.sbb.ch) is highly useful. The French end of the trip is more problematic. In my experience its best to forget the idea of a train, and take one of the regular, albeit expensive, buses run by Cars Martin. From Courchevel I think there is a connecting service to Moutiers. Timetable (and fares) are at : www.alpskibus.com with links in English. Courchevel is 64 EUR one-way or 104 EUR. Journey time from Moutiers to Geneva is 2 hours (scheduled with good conditions and no traffic jams). Some tour operators MAY have spare seats on transfer coaches, but they seem to have realized that its an opportunity for making some cash, so don't count on this method. Either way it is best to change at Geneva Airport: there are lots of trolleys which can be taken down into the station by escalator, there are a couple of decent bars and restaurants (a pizzeria above the station). The Gare Routiere (Bus Station) is just far enough from the main station in Geneva to be inconvenient, particularly when lugging skis), and the station itself is quite crowded, lots of steps etc. About the best timing is as follows: arr dep Courchevel ??:?? -- probably 1 hour earlier Moutiers ??:?? 12:20 Genève-Aéroport 14:20 15:09 Visp 17:32 17:37 Zermatt 18:43 So 6:23 from Moutiers, probably an hour longer from Courchevel itself, but three simple changes. Its expsnsive though, at least 120 EUR one-way! For anyone interested in going the other way, there is a ticket office for the buses on the arrival concourse of the airport, abuot halfway along its length. Sticking to the airport for changing from train to bus is even more worthwhile in this direction, as the facilities at the Gare Routiere are rudimentary. Hope this helps, Jerry Clough |
