Recommendations for Weekend Sking in Early December in Europe
Hi,
I have to organise a stag weekend for the first weekend of december this year, and even though it is very early, I woas wondering could we book somewhere that is fairly reliable for skiable snow that time of year? Obviously we will have to go high, I was thinking maybe Cervina, or Chamonix as both are very high and steep and both have glaciers. Any recommendations? thanks Daithi |

I've done Engelburg in November a couple of times (it's only 1.5 hours away) and Saas Fee and Zermatt the first w/e of Dec the past two seasons. All pretty good. -- Ace (brucedotrogers a.t rochedotcom) Ski Club of Great Britain - http://www.skiclub.co.uk All opinions expressed are personal and in no way represent those of the Ski Club. |

Chamonix is not a good choice for very early season. All the ski areas in Chamonix need a good coverage before they open. Le Tour may open with less depth, but the Brevent/Flegere and the Grandss Montets need a good snow fall before they open. You may get lucky, thay can open in early December but it's not a good bet. Tignes/Tignes or Val Thorens would be the best bet I think. |

Depends how much skiing you want to do... Verbier usually opens a few easy runs (Lac de Vaux) as early as November, weekends only. Depending on snow cover they also open up some of the lower slopes. In Chamonix, Grands Montets usually opens in November, the rest depends on the snow cover but in any case weekends only. Advantage of Verbier and Chamonix are their accessibility from Geneva, and the fact that they are real towns, lively even out of season. But I agree with other posters that the best bet for the skiing would be Tignes/Val d'Isere, even though the night life might be limited. Do you really need to book so early? Why don't you simply book your flights, and leave the choice of resort to the last moment? This year many places started their season very early, due to the early snow, but it's not always the case... |
