Weather report -Austrian Alps
Hi,
Just a quick report. We had 70cm of snow here but it is now compacted to 60cm. But it has been snowing since and looking at this radar:- www.wetteronline.de/dldlradf.htm I think we will get a big dump!!! On the news yesterday they were forcasting 1m of new snow!!!! Thats why this is a quick report because I'm off to do some snow clearing so we can drive to the town and buy some food!! So the snow looking good for skiing at Christmas and the new year. I have a few new photos on the web site and will take some more when it stops snowing. Went for a quick ski yesterday no one around. I can't get over the fact that we only live about 5 mins away from a ski lift!!! Give an update later. Nigel -- Winter and Summer holidays in the alps!!! www.austrianfamilyholidays.co.uk |

Sounds good. Its snowing here in Munich at the moment, probably about 5cm
on the ground. I think I'll head down your way tomorrow and go for a ski - conditions should be great because even last weekend before this snow, the conditions were really good. Anyone coming to Austria for Christmas/New Years need not worry about lack of snow. "Nigel" wrote in message ... Hi, Just a quick report. We had 70cm of snow here but it is now compacted to 60cm. I can now honestly say I know what a face-shot is. The morning was the best ski day of my life - at least 50cm of new snow and a really solid base. The only problem was that Seefeld tend to groom almost everything and that it isn't very steep so getting the speed to hit the powder required getting some speed up on the groomed slopes first.. At some points, when I crashed in the deep powder, I would get my poles and dig them into the ground to try to get back up. It was no good though cause the whole pole (125cm) would disappear beneath me. Austria at least is having an amazing start to the season. |

Sometimes helps, but not if it's very light powder and/or you're very heavy/unfit like me ! |

Hi
I've shown this tecnique to many people, most of whom had never seen it before. But yes, making an X with your poles and pressing down in the middle can make a _huge_ difference to getting up in powder. Also simple one pole may help already. Its basically the same idea as doing a dead man anchor with an ice axe. Florian |

Yep, ended up doing it this way and it was helping, however I have those carbon fibre poles so they are quite thin so they don't work quite so well. Thought I would try just digging them in, but that was even worse. However, even when I was stuck there, struggling like a turtle on its back, I wasn't complaining one bit and the grin was still firmly on my face |
