Default Socks for skiing

What material is good for skiing?

I have used cotton, and have numerious problems.

1) when wet, they are cold

2) if I get snow on them, the snow collects at my ankles.

Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Micheal

Dear Michael:

If good wool doesn't agree with your feet, Wigwam makes a nice
synthetic alternative called Ultimax. Eagle River Nordic carried
them. The model and name may have changed this year, so ask them
about it.

By the way, my Craft socks ARE mostly wool, though they may make
synthetics, too.

Cover the sock tops with your tights, or use gaiters to keep the snow
out. Sounds like you must be into back country or least ungroomed
trail skiing.

Non cotton - and not just your socks. There are a lot of choices.
Craft (warm) and Smartwool (warmer) are deservedly popular and widely
available. Both also have padding on bottom. Start Crew weight to get
feel for warmth before going thicker for 1-3 hr ski outings, and
thicker (mid or heavy) for colder days and longer skis.

I usually just wear some nylon dress socks. I don't have a sweating
problem, and I don't get cold easily either, so warmer socks usually
aren't necessary, and I don't like bulk. And these aren't bulky enough
to even get wet really. If you sweat a lot, I assume you are warm
enough not to need very insulating socks.

Have you tried thin wool socks especially made for XC skiing? If not,
try them.

Wool is not prone to make you sweat any more than other materials of
same insulation (i.e. thickness). I suspect you're wearing wool socks
that are simply too heavy.

Almost any synthetic sock will also work, choosing thickness depending
on what you need.
