Default Ski Instructor Tipping?

We will be taking my son to Snowmass this year and I intend to sign him up
for the all day, small group ski lessons. Is a tip expected and if so, what
is the appropriate amount to tip the instructor?

Thanks,
William

I wouldn't mind a tip if I taught your son but I've only been tipped
once where I taught. May be different in the south (I'm from Ontario).
Here, you'd only get a tip if you performed an essentially ski-related
miracle.

I usually tip the instructor about 10 dollars per kid - Snowmass has
an extremely well organized and busy ski school - the instructors are
great and the mountain has a kids area that has snow castles - trails,
a couple of reindeer etc. - after lessons my kids took me on a tour
and I was impressed - they also have a race day during the week with
announcers, timing machines and pins - you will not be diappointed.

A tip of about $10/kid for group classes or $20/kid for privates classes.

If you like the instructor be sure to request them the next time. It usually
helps the instuctor earn more and increases their ranking in the ski schools
without costing you anything additional.

Feed back to the supervisors is also welcome. Usually the only comments are
complaints, if you had a good time, praise of a job well done is very much
appreciated.

If your kid cried all day, had a number of unusual special requests or was a
general pain in the ass. If might be a good idea to tip too. It helps soothe
the pain. Instuctors really have to earn their keep at times.

Most instructors make about $8 to $20 (depending on experience ) an hour, the
rest of the lesson fee goes to the mountian they work for.

Well, ski instructors don't get paid that much so if you do tip it is
really really appreciated. People do tip instructors but it's really
not expected. However, if you do something nice for an instructor
like buy them lunch, a beer or tip, they will remember you. As far as
an appropriate amount goes, I've had friends who have been tipped
anywhere from $10 to $100.

Thanks to everybody for the input. I've been to Snowmass twice before and
have watched some of the ski school instructors with the kids classes on the
mountain. I was very impressed and know that they can help him improve. I
just didn't know what was normally expected in the way of tipping.

Thanks,
William

Back when I was learning I tried to tip my ski instructor. But no
matter how solidly I ran into him, he stayed upright.

So, yes, they will expect you to try to tip them, but most won't go over.
