1. What does this have to do with rec.skiing.backcountry, were the bears
telemarkers or AT'ers?

2. Bears 2, Bruins 0, common sense; totally removed from ballots in CA

Go ahead truckee, equate us Coloradans with Texans again...this could be
fun.

Go Arnold, you bozos deserve him.

The two people eaten were backcountry folks... I've seen bear while
randonee skiing - they don't all have a calendar with hibernation days
marked.

You got that one right - no common sense in California politics on ANY side.

That was a "Mike," not me. I merely pointed out Colorado's prediliction
to exaggerate ownership of 14ners. You, sir, need an Evelyn Wood reading

That's absolutely correct. Furthermore, "winter bears" are apt to be in a
very bad mood and very hungry. They are greatly feared by trappers of
interior Alaska. Anyone spending significant back country time in bear
country should know how to avoid and how to handle bear encounters.

Ahh..alas you are correct, I must have missed that through the red tint
everything had when reading it!

I have seen bears during ski season, but it is very rare, and in both cases
the bears showed no interest in our party, in fact they made tracks in the
other direction, quickly. Never ran into any bears in the AK bc, skiing or
otherwise, but then I haven't had the pleasure to spend much time there
either.

From the news article, these people went out of their way to put themselves
in the bears faces. Not too smart, no matter how much experience you think
you have, as evidenced by this attack and another notable recent predator
attack in the wilds of Las Vegas.

Vinnie ---- spends a good deal of time in Maryland, but only as much as I
have to for work.
