Unless it's a replacement for his old one, the implications are he's new
to beacons and hence new to avalanche terrain? That places some
constraints on advice:

An avalanche course would be extremely useful (also see below [1].)

I suggest a digital beacon - a digital beacons will be easier to use at
the possible modest loss of some range, and if he doesn't get much
hands-on practice finding buried beacons, ease of use is vital.

Couloir published a review:

I'd also suggest a shovel, probes (or at least probe poles minimum.)

And finally but definitely not least, a new set of buddys who have
beacons and probes and shovels and know how to use them.

I'd also suggest he practice at every opportunity - around here the
patrol often buries a beacon in a known bowl for its members to practice
locating - if such happens at his home area (just ask the patrol) he
should take advantage of it to practice as often as possible. More
importantly, from his (and your) perspective, he should get his new
buddys to practice as well.

[1] He can maybe find some of those avalanche equiped Buddys at the
avalanche course.
