Vermont - 36 years ago
Anyone out there remember skiing Vermont many years ago when things were
quite a bit more primative (maybe more fun) than we experience now. I have very fond memories of being at Pico Peak in Feb. 1968. I was only 6 years old but the memory will be with me always. Our family of 5 left southern New Jersey for our first trip to VT. We had a 65' Chevy Bel Air packed to the hilt with food and equipment. Started snowing in Jersey soon after we departed. What should have been a 8 hour drive turned into 15+ as we crawled up the NY thruway in a true blizzard. The car kept stalling as it ate the blowing snow and the only reason we were not freezing was because we were packed into the car like sardines. It was a different world back then. NY state thruway employees driving tow trucks stopped to help us many times. Helped us get the car running again numerous times but wouldn't take a cent for their effort. Many cars were in the ditch and flashing lights were constant. We finally arrive at 2am only to find the access road up the mountain to the Chalets caked with about a foot of fresh powder. Luckily one of the Chalet owners came down the mountain and rescued us in his huge Ford 4x4. What a thrill. We wake up late the next morning and have to tunnel our way out of the Chalet front door to get out of the house. Still snowing hard. We end up with 36" - to this day the biggest storm that I have ever experienced (although not so big by Western standards I guess). At Pico in 1968 the ski staff / instructors were from Austria. They were quite a fun bunch to be with. Yodeling through the mountain during the day and performing their native dances in front of a massive fireplace at night. The double chair lift was state-of-the-art. I'd love to re-live that era and that scene but it is gone forever. I hope you have had similar experiences that will stay with you forever. |

you have had similar experiences that will stay with you forever. Nice story. Buy an old car and drive to Mad River Glen, and you'll be close. Unfortunately, my father would have just as likely sent us to the moon as Vermont. But my kids have similar memories as you do. .................................................. ...............
