Paging the skiers - good obit
In Today's Times. Emile Allais, French skiing champion of bygone days,
who won the downhill on Kitzbuhel's Hahnenkahm in (get this) 1934, and who didn't give the Nazi salute to Hitler at the 1936 Winter Olympics. He helped develop modern ski bindings, helped estabish the resorts of Courchevel, Meribel, and (in Chile) Portillo, and was skiing into his 90s, even after a collision with (inevitably) a snowboarder at the age of 90 resulted in a broken shoulder. Described in the 1950s by the New York Times as a "congenital member of the suicide club". Thoroughly recommended. -- Honda CB400 Four Triumph Street Triple Ducati 800SS Yamaha 660 Tenere Suzuki GT500 GN250, TS250ERx2 So many bikes, so little garage space.... chateau dot murray at idnet dot com |
