Default Williams Lake XC Skiing: End of an Era

Today was the last day that Williams Lake Hotel in Rosendale, NY was open to
day and overnight guests. It will soon be sold to Canopy Development whose
principles I am told include Steve Case of Time Warner and tennis player
Andri Agassi. It is destined to be an ultra exclusive resort spa.

Williams Lake had an history spanning nearly 80 years that included deep
roots in biathlon, xc skiing and touring, and jumping. Ed Williams Jr.,
grandson of the founder was a member of the first USA Olympic Biathlon Team
in 1960. Williams Lake was the site of many high level cross country and
biathlon competitions. The Rosendale Nordic Ski Club is thought to be the
oldest nordic ski club in USA. The Williams Lake/Rosendale Nordic Ski Club
tradition was broad and deep.

I consider this a salvo reflecting and signaling the ongoing demise of xc
skiing in this region. This real estate transaction also likely signals a
scramble for investors to purchase properties in the area. Life will not be
the same in the sleepy Roundout Valley. Down the road in Kerhonkson, a golf
club was recently purchased by Vijay Sing. While I have skied on the Hudson
Valley Resort Gold Course, and they have a monster Piston Bully, they really
never developed skiing. Perhaps one of these two new developers will
accommodate skiers with snow making and some public access that wouldn't
affect the experience of their clientele. Let's hope.
