Default Conditions for Keski

Looks very good so far. I skied the upper end of the park on Sunday, and
conditions were perfect.

From the Gatineau Park website at 8:30 this morning:
Air temp -3C
Snow temp -2C
Humidity 85%

Conditions very good to excellent.

http://www.capcan.ca/gatineau/outdoo...nditions_e.asp

The long range forecast doesn't go to Sunday yet, but looks good through
Friday - flurries for Wednesday throug Friday, lows around -12C to -16C,
highs from -8C to -2C.

http://weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/forecast/city_e.html?yow

The weather office website should be used as just a guideline, since the
weather is slightly different in the park than for the city. People who are
training are of course a better source.

Good luck to everyone competing!

Tim

(Beckie Scott is scheduled to be at the Sprints in Jacques Cartier Park on
Friday night, for anyone who's in town)

Now for the weather.

Yes, it is still a little far off to be reliable, but a major cold
front is expect to push through and drop temps from a high of -8°C
Saturday to -30°something Sunday and Monday....

Everyone remember what they wore last year?

It's strange but the long-range forecasts seem to call for super-cold
weather for Sunday. Is it possible to drop so much so suddenly?

Like MétéoMédia has a high(!) of -25C on Sunday.
http://www.meteomedia.ca/Meteo/Ville...s/CAQC0177.htm

And Weather Underground claims -29F/-34C Saturday night!!

I'm worried.

MeteoMedia is now showing a high temperature of -11C / +12F for Sunday.
Let's see what Environment Canada says tomorrow when their five-day forecast
reaches out to Sunday.

I guess so, when "it" is a "chaotic" mathematical model running from a set
of inputs it wasn't calibrated for.

I know, I also saw that strange -25C number in their forecast earlier today.
But the U.S. National Weather Service for Watertown NY showed a more likely
range, which they have since revised colder to 5F / -15C to 10F / -12C.

When I skied Keski the race was postponed an hour or so to allow for time to
"warm up". I really think that the officials used a match or lighter or
other heat sourse to get the temp reading up to 0 F.

Could be a good day to classical the FS race. That's what I did, and I save
a lot of energy doing it that way.

Seems that the race is held usually in either very cold or very warm
condtions. 20-28 F maybe is not common for a midwinter temp there.

Have fun. It's a great event. Bring your ice skates. I think I'll be there
next year.

With the drastic weather change predicted for this weekend, it's
possible the temp will be falling all day Sunday...

I still don't understand these weather forecasts.

Environment Canada is saying a high of -9C for Sunday, whereas
MétéoMédia is saying says -17. That's a big difference.

I don't use either of these info sources often -- is it possible the
Environment Canada high temp is for midnight Saturday, and the
MétéoMédia is for early afternoon Sunday, with temps falling all day?

I'd assume Env. Can. is more accurate, and the others are just using
an out-of-date one from Env. Can. That's the optimistic point of
view anyway, and that's the way it always works around here in
S. Ont. I think all the other people who put out forecasts get them
from Env. Can., and often don't update too often.

Best, Peter
