Default Wanna do a 14ner this New Years Eve or Da

Sorry to be an ignorant Brit, but what is a 14ner, apart from a very
succseful conker?

First of all, it's "14er", not "14ner". (Think fourteener)

A 14er is one of the 54 mountain peaks in Colorado which are 14,000 feet or
higher.

It is the goal of all Colorado mountain climbers to climb some of them (I have
done 8). It is the goal of more adventurous climbers to do all 54. Many have
done it. Some have done it (climbed all 54) in 10 days.

However, the task has become more difficult in recent years as one peak is
actually private. The owners allow about 20 climbers a year.

Most folks can do 40 of them as day hikes. Some require a hike in to the base.
And a few are actually technical climbs.

FWIW, the highest Colorado peak is Mt. Elbert at 14,431 feet. Pikes Peak is
way down the list at 14,110 ft.

You are welcome to come by and climb as many as you can or care to.

Cheers, TCS

check my other posting cali-boy, you californicators don't have the market
cornered on 'correctness' either. "It is not a tooomah, it is Los Angeles"
(soon to be the next sound-bite from your governer).

Hey, how about an avy-rescue dog? Those are handy.

Too funny... Every once in a blue moon I ski with my roomate; his
Husky is quite proficient as a rescue dog (or so I've been assured).
Problem is: the damned thing hates me, so I doubt its utility.

A 14ner is one of the 14,000 foot peaks in the contiguous United States.
(I believe "contiguous" is part of the definition - usually the Alaskan
and Hawaiian 14,000+ peaks are not included? Correct?)

BTW Collyradicans misbelieve that they have cornered the market on
14ners, and so assume when speaking of 14ners - as usual, they are
incorrect.
