Backcountry areas in California?
I just recently got a set of Randonee gear (sorry Telemark fans) and I'm
dying to try it out in the backcountry (already hit the slopes with it). I know there is lots of good stuff on the eastern side of the Sierras, but is there any good stuff on the Western side? I live in the SF bay area. I was hoping to find something that would be a good trip up and down and not just a nordic trip (have basic X-country gear also). Also how is the Mt Lassen area for this? I'm hoping to work up to Shasta this spring. Anybody else in the Bay area that goes out and has Thurs - Sat off by any chance? -- John To reply direct, "removeme" from my address |

"John Lechmanik" wrote Also how is the Mt Lassen area for this? I'm hoping to work up to Shasta this spring. Lassen is a great tour. Trouble is getting to the peak in winter. It's a bit of a haul, definitely not a day trip for the likes of me. I save Lassen for spring skiing once the road is open. Usually hit it at least once a year. Lots of nice tours around Donner Summit - Castle Peak, etc. Lots of nice tours around Echo Summit - Ralston, Pyramid, etc. Lots of nice tours around Carson Pass too - Red Lake Peak, Round Top, etc. Check out either Moynier's back country ski guide, or perhaps better for your purposes, take a look at 50 Classis Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Summits in California, by Paul Richens Jr., published by The Mountaineers. Thanks I just picked up the 50 classic book, it looks like a winner. It
also seems that most good skiing won't start till after Ferburary (maybe some runs up in Tahoe before then, I've been up to Castle on my X-country gear). I have a feeling my spring is going to get very busy.... Do you know many people who get out on trips? None of my friends are in to AT skiing (some downhill, some snowshoe) and it would be nice to find partners (better if they have Thur - Sat off). -- John To reply direct, "removeme" from my address "Dingus Milktoast" wrote in message ... Not a March snowpack, but certainly enough to play around on. TPR has a January special price of $100 per night. Do you know many people who get out on trips? Tioga Pass Resort??? I don't think I even know what that is :-) I think my
1/1/04 is taken (hopefully rock climbing at Pinnacles if the weather holds, but you never know in the future. But hopefully after the weather settles down and drops some good snow...... I don't have Sunday's off (Thursday - Sat for me), but hey you never know. It would be good to get out. I think my plans will include Castle Peak (been up around there before), Mt. Lassen, and Mt. Shasta. And hopefully a run or two on the eastern side of the Sierras. I can see this is going to hurt my windsurfing season :-) -- John To reply direct, "removeme" from my address "Terry Morse" wrote in message ... Booker, thanks for the BC ski list, but any idea how to join it? Or a
webpage that links to it? -- John To reply direct, "removeme" from my address bbense+rec.skiing.backcountry.Dec.27.03@telemark. slac.stanford.edu wrote in message ... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- In article xg7Gb.630309$HS4.4593763@attbi_s01, John Lechmanik wrote: Thanks I just picked up the 50 classic book, it looks like a winner. Here's their web site: http://www.tiogapassresort.com/ You get a bed, showers, 3 meals, and as much terrain as you can cover. The road's closed in Winter, so you have this huge area to yourself. The lodge is at 9500'. Some photos from a prior trip: http://www.terrymorse.com/ski/trip/tpr0203/index.htm -- terry morse Palo Alto, CA http://www.terrymorse.com/ski/ |
