Default PID temperature controller on wax iron revisited

Hi All,

Last year I posted on the idea of mounting a PID temperature
controller on a standard wax iron and made a first pass at an
implementation. I've just made a 2nd attempt with a cleaner looking
result. Details he

That is pretty cool. I suppose this type of setup would be appropriate
for a hotbox controller too. Of course, you'd use the PID to control a
heater instead of iron, but it's quite similar I would guess.

Yes, anything with a thermostat and an electric heating element can be
improved with a PID and SSR. It's just a question of whether the
improved temperature control is both necessary and worth the cost.

Nice idea. The Wintersteiger iron, however, doesn't pass the knock
test; i.e., it seems to have a hollow base. That would undermine the
usefulness of the temp controller.

Yes, you're right about the base being hollow on this iron. Are there
any low cost irons with a more massive base?
