Default Jay T's Big Saturday Workout 8-9-03

A big day in the famed Afton Hills. Yeah, I'm getting serious about
the upcoming ski season again... I'll be serious until I realize I'll
be 46 in December... Golf is a lot easier by the way... Anyway, I
cruised up the big 15th Street climb and actually felt pretty good.
Next, I climbed the hill on S 71 and then the climb on to Valley
Creek. After that, it was an easy cruise on Stagecoach into Afton.
However, the Big Coulee climb awaited me. I blasted up the big monster
and then contiuned on to the 50th, Odell, 50th (2nd) and HWY 71 N
climb. Other than a few blisters, it was a great workout. The thing
about being in your 40s though is that you have one or two days like
that per week as oppossed (sp) to four or five when you are younger.
The idea is to time those days for the big events...

Well given what you did the day before are you surprised?

I'm curious though. Are you looking to peak at any certain point or
are you looking for general fitness?

Also, how much do you feel that riding will give you fitness for
skiing? I thought the general thinking was that the only thing that will
really give you skiing fitness, is skiing.

I am the reverse of you Jay. Everything I do is for bike racing and
not skiing. I only use skiing to stay off the boredom of the gym and
riding that damn trainer... When I do go skiing I try to keep the
intensity to a minimum because I want my biggest efforts to be on the
bike and not on the skis.

We are in the twilight of racing here where I live. A few weeks left
to squeak out that podium. ;-)

I'm at that stage where I enjoy skiing, biking and golf equally. I
don't really care about results anymore but I'd like to at least
maintain what I've got for a few more years. I'm using my age as a
reason to contemplate backing off from all of the serious training...
I haven't backed off yet but I'm getting closer every day. I've been
ski racing over 20 years. I don't want to put in the effort to get any
faster but I've had some decent results over the years by my
standards... I'll keep skiing but I'm not sure I'll maintain my
current fitness level.

Give me reasons for and against training harder... Or better yet,
reasons for or against training less...

C'mon, Jay, as long as you define "maintain what I've got" the correct
way, surely you want more than "a few more years". An analysis of
many years of (Norwegian) Birkebeiner stats seems to indicate
roughly
the following:

Lose 5% between 40 and 50,
another 10% between 50 and 60
another 15% between 60 and 70,

and you are really keeping your fitness. Then maybe we might consider
letting you retire!!

Jays weakness is the pre packaged sandwiches at Super America Gas and Go
stores. Those of us who know him are pretty used to this line of thinking.
Yet he is always either knocking on the door or just sneaking of to the top
200 at the Birkie. He seems to get really into a new sport each summer. Two
years ago he would golf at the drop of a hat, last summer Mountain Bike
racing each weekend and this year he is consumed by road biking and building
new bikes from components scarfed from e-Bay. Yet when the snow falls he
seems to respond to the call and put it in overdrive to get ready for winter
and almost always has a good racing season.

There's fitness, and then there's motivation. I wonder if some part of these
stats are due to skiers not interested in suffering by working at a certain
level, even though they might be able to. Maybe with age comes the
possibility of finding satisfaction by enjoyment.

Well, that's my rationalization.

If I understand what Dan Karig has told me (and he's trained in summer
and winter too I think with these guys), the top Birkebeiners in
the 60-70 age groups probably train harder (prbably have more time!)
than the top ones in their 40's. I only used averages from the top
five in each category, and those categories have 300 to 600 entries,
about 90% Norwegian. I seem to recall hearing Tronsmoen referred to
as a professional skier (in his 70's) here one time. Dan did tell
me that the guy who cleans up in my category (Kvaale) is till working
as a policeman in Trondheim, and is just someone with an unbeleivably
high natural aerobic capacity. He's the 60 year old who came 5 minutes
ahead of both US female WC skiers (one was Nina Kempell) a couple of
years ago when it was simultaneously a WC event, despite carrying the
8 lb. pack which the WCers didn't. I suspect that all but a few hundred
North American 30 yr. old male skiers would be delighted to even keep
up with her in a race.

So I think those stats on age deterioration do use skiers with just
about maximum motivation. Very few would be under 600 hrs./yr. training.
