Default Helmet selection

Guys,

As the season is drawing closer I've gotten my helmet choices down to
one of the following:

Giro Fuse
Giro Nine.9
Leedom Limit Cut

That's in order of current preference. The Fuse I like because of the
"thermostat" feature and the colors available. The Nine.9 is lighter
but doesn't have the thermostat and seems less likely to let air
through. I really like the Leedom but can't find anyone nearby that
stocks them for me to try out first. Then there's some issue about
them practically demanding a matched set of goggles which isn't a
problem for the Giro's.

Thoughts? Do goggles sit up above the brow nicely on any/all of these
when you put up your goggles or will that be a continual problem?

I got the 9, because it fit well (and my ski shop guy was cuttin'
deals that day). It's got a lotta vent holes, with a few removable
plugs. It's pretty low-tech, since you have to take the helmet off to
change the ventilation (by adding or removing plugs), and you have to
stow the plugs somewhere they won't get lost if you're not using them,
but if you're organized enough to handle that, it works very nicely.
It's kept me warm on really cold days, and I haven't overheated on
warm, sunny days. And the goggles sit on the brow very comfortably.

Me and my wife both have the Fuse and we both love it. The thermostat
feature is real good, we use it all the time and no problem with the
googles. I would definetly buy this helmet again.

I have the 9 and like the helmet but the plugs are pretty worthless.
There is plenty of ventilation which was a problem with my old Borei.
I took the plugs out the first time and left them in the car. A day
of sunlight and a hot car and they will never fit in the helmet again.
Not much of a problem since I only needed them in on a couple of the
coldest days. Still, I would opt for something that's all one piece
next time. You really don't need to be carrying more parts around in
your pocket. Or keeping them in your bag and not having them when you
really need them.

As far as goggles go, they do fit rather well when down and they do
stay put when up but after one season, the foam on the goggles got
pretty chewed up on the edges. I usually end up buying new goggles
every season or so anyway. I think that is going to be a problem with
pretty much any helmet.

Spoke to Leedom today. Boy, they sound like they're in a real sticky
situation. For one thing, their main phone number calls one of their
executives at his house. Clearly this is a small company. Their
website is also perpetually under development so there's nothing to
see there.

However, it was an informative discussion. The rep mentioned that Giro
(pronounced Jeer-Oh, which is nice to know as I've been saying
"Gear-Oh" all this time) has dominated the industry and managed to get
the market high on non-hardshell designs that aren't anywhere near as
sturdy as hardshells.

He did point out that their new Prophet helmet is very much like the
Giro Fuse (with no pull-out wind plugs like the Fuse) but that he felt
people need to decide what they want in a helmet. If safety is the
concern then these styrofoam helmets are not the answer (Fuse, Nine.9,
Zen, Prophet).

I was mainly getting it to get some protection but mainly to keep my
head fully warm. Interesting info.

Yup, it's pronounced with the soft G. The name must come the Giro
d'Italia (Tour of Italy) bike race, which is the #2 race in importance
after the Tour de France. Giro started out making bike helmets I
believe; I know I've owned one or two made by them, though I have now
switched to a Bell Influx.

I always pronounced it "YEE-row". Which may explain why I get hungry
for Greek food when I'm skiing.

I have the Leedum cut. I had a Giro initially and really liked the
fit, but the wind noise whistling past the ear openings when skiing at
any sort of speed was quite distracting. And someone stole the
helmet. The Leedom fits well also, and the adjustable air circulation
device works quite well. I keep mine open on all but the very coldest
days. Goggles require an extra long strap or one of those helmet
booster inserts to the strap. I have Smith turbo goggles with the
little fan to keep my glasses clear, so I rarely put the goggles up on
the brow of the helmet. They'll go there, but not stay really
soundly.
