sknyski's "old school" world tour 2004
Yes I've heard lots of good things about the Ketchum, Idaho area. But I
still haven't finished trying out all your suggestions for Utah skiing -- thanks, Chris. Sharon and I like Salt Lake City as our airport city, because there's so many more convenient airline flights -- so we get an extra day or two of skiing on each vacation trip -- and we have lots more options if we need to change our return flights (like I just did on Monday). So we would still ski in Utah on our first and last day, and rent a car and use the evening hours to drive up to Ketchum / Sun Valley (or Targhee, or Jackson, or south to Bryce or Moab or ). The other great thing about Sun Valley backcountry is that there's hardly any one in it, as opposed to the sometimes crowded ridges in the relatively compact central Wasatch. I have driven up to Ketchum a couple of times -- one January I stayed three nights in a yurt by some groomed tracks -- but it rained every day. So I haven't had a chance to get acquainted with the backcountry terrain there. I've heard some people complain about the crowded Wasatch backcountry -- but it has way more detailed and helpful avalanche info than most other places, important if you're a non-local. But there will be some future vacation where we'll find marginal snow in the Wasatch and great conditions in Idaho, and then we'll make the drive north -- and try out some of those tours on your Sun Valley report.
