"Anders" wrote in message ups.com... IMHO there are two rules: 1) Do not appear like a bolt out of the blue; make some noise (kick loudly, cough, whistle, whatever) *well before you´re at his/her tail* and 2a) Switch tracks or hop into the skating lane/ *in good time* or 2b) make your skating movement narrower(so that it´s immediately obvious to the slower skier than there´s no need for him to jump anywhere to avoid a collision or to escape your fury) . There´s usually no need to issue any explicit warning. Anders When I pass another skier, I believe it is my responsability to do so in a manner that is safe for both of us and that I do it without "annoying" this person. .. Most trails I ski are double-track plus a skate lane. It is very easy for me to step into the other track or onto the skating lane and pass. .. If a ski a double-track only, I take the free track and pass. If there are no free tracks (or if I ski a single track trail), I simply say "please" from a distance and repeat as needed. 95% of the skiers do understand and clear track so I can pass and say "thanks" (the remaining 5% are just a bunch of ?#*&!). ; ) .. When passing, I keep my poles as low as possible: most beginners or ski walkers feel threatened by pole tips being pointed at them. .. The only times I am really annoyed is when people stop on the trails and stay in the tracks. Especially at the end of a downhill section... I must admit that my vocabulary changes and I become a little less polite! BarryT |

Sure, one comment doesn't exclude others. I find "on your left" (often
add "hi") in an appropriate tone usually suffices for both a warning and a greeting. If the alert isn't necessary, then a "hello" comes as I draw up alongside. Then there's the "Hello" of a different kind that follows an unheard or unheeded alert. Gene John Forrest Tomlinson wrote: On 23 Jan 2005 07:53:59 -0800, "sknyski" wrote: This is retarded. Do you honk each time you pass a car on the freeway? Exactly. Each sport has its own ettiquette. The downhill skiers have precedence in skiing is particular to skiing and makes sense. But the concept of "warning" someone in passing is universally retarded regardless of whether you're on a bike, in car, running, cycling, whatever. The only time a warning like that has value is if you are passing someone really close. But passing someone that close is obnoxious in a public space. If you are overtakign someone, it's your responsiblity to not buzz them. And if you're not buzzing them, the honking, hupping, tracking, on your lefting is retarded. Just say hello after you pass if you have to say anything. JFT **************************** Remove "remove" to reply Visit http://www.jt10000.com **************************** |

Bruce, you obviously did not read my post.
My points a - There is no need to warn slower skiers if you give them a wide berth - People who are new to a sport should not lecture people who are experienced about etiquette. Make sure you have your facts straight before you shoot your mouth off. Bryant Tolles Cupertino, CA |

[Just a historical note: Nazi Germany passed legislation so they could
legally round up the mentally retarded and exterminated them, as well as jews, gypsies, and homosexuals.] Bruce, thanks for taking the bait. I used the term "retarded" just to see if some uptight p.c. moron would call me on it. Turns out that that uptight p.c. moron is you. Bryant |

. When passing, I keep my poles as low as possible: most beginners
or ski walkers feel threatened by pole tips being pointed at them. This seems to be the point where the car / bike passing analogy breaks down -- cars and bikes don't have long, pointy metal-tipped objects flailing out into adjoining lanes. Hence the virtue of the wide berth. I've often seen beginning skiers step out of a lane but leave their poles ready to trip / impale anyone who dared to ski in that lane. |
