Default How cold???

"Simon Brown" spake thusly to the assembled
multitudes, agog with barely concealed anticipation:

Locals now forecasting very cold with little snow due to the activity of the
moles.

It's not going to snow because of the moles? Well, you know what you have
to do.... Shoot the *******s!!!!!

Seriously it's because the molehills are flat instead of heaped up. I am not
jesting, no I haven't been on the funny cigarettes either.

base station, where is that exactly?

At the bottom David.

In which case I think snowforecast has got its knickers in a twist again
- the base of skiing in Chamonix is Chamonix, which is around 1100
meters and I doubt even in the dead of night that it will be that cold.

I'd not be tso surprised, it staggers me how cold it gets in Chamonix
town centre this time of year. The cold air just seems to drop to the
valley floor and and the sunlight just doesn't reach it sometimes. I
think the tourist office has it as -10 this morning but I'm not sure
where they measure it.

It's -5 here in the OdenWald in Germany, temperatures are dropping.

Although it snowed near Lausanne at 550 meters so it is definitely colder.

I'm glad I put the winter tyres on yesterday then :-)

If it dumps loads in November then actually manages to stay cold in
December rather than raining I will be impressed.

Yeah, because you never know when the value of 2^15 will change and
you have to go through all your code fixing it.

Just up the road, this morning it snowed down to 800m in Bourg St
Maurice, but it had all melted by mid pm. Looks pretty thin on the
ground right up to Arcs 1600 right now ...

We had about 3 inches fall last night around here (at ~400m) - was
quite wet and re-froze onto the car windscreen, which was annoying.
Most of the roads were completely clear, but quite a lot had settled.

From the grey skies I'd say there was more on the way...

Ah, but who are "they"? I think you'll find "they" are not bona fide
meteorologists. "They" are more likely to be idiots like me posting to
news groups :-) However, I (in my capacity as random poster to r.s.r.e)
reckon it's going to be a big winter, simply because really hot summers
are sometime followed by cold snowy winters and I'm on a lucky streak
(my last day of skiing last season was in Jackson Hole in 21" of
overnight powder). Not that this prediction changes anything, I'm still
leaving booking to the last minute where I can and I'm taking a good
book to read for my New Year trip to the Grand Massif, just in case.

And I don't care for the predictions of moles.
