it's that hole in the snow that your butt leaves when you fall backwards and
land on it :-)

A "sitzmark" is the mark you leave when you suddenly "sitz" --i.e., the
divot you leave if you fall in the middle of the trail.


Just to emphasise how serious this can be.
On an open trail the skilled skier doing classic will control
the direction his ski tip takes and stop it sliding out to the side
when he hits the cavity in the sidewall.

Some old fool like me daydreaming in the warm spring sun
could find his tip going off to the left whilst his knee drives
forward. That hobble back to the car with a ligament tear can
hurt your body and your pride !!
