Anyone else have any similar stories or what do you do in relation to
paying/not paying?

Paul

Ryanair's small print is per bag not pair of skis and has no impact on
the baggage allowance, so I pack 2 pairs and all the bulky skiwear in
a large ski bag - also handy for padding and protecting booze on the
return. When booking (you can't book skis over the internet) you are
ask how many pairs of "skis", and I advise you to say "one ski bag"
otherwise they will charge you double.

Brains

This is definitely 'one to watch' - Ryanair's boss is on the record as
saying he wants to get rid of all hold baggage from his flights!

A few years ago two of us booked a ski hol with a travel agent. My
friend had skis and so the agent charged him £10 carriage for the
aircraft.

I subsequently bought skis and we both went to the airport and both
checked our skis in. I was not charged at the airport and my
friend's tickets had no indication that he'd paid extra.

Exactly my experience in the past - the airline never saw the cash
and the TO charged you as a way of compensating themselves for the
lost commission because you didn't hire skis.

That's the rumour I heared. On the one occasion I flew on a scheduled
airline, they didn't charge extra.

IME Most scheduled airlines (including Easyjet but not Ryanair) allow 10Kg
for sporting equipment over your normal baggage allowance. The Tour
operators started charging extra about 10 years ago and it is just a con.

Tipping in the US. I don't have a problem with paying for service, but
it's practically obligatory to give 15%, and staff will often get
stroppy if you don't. Why thay can't just include it in the price I
don't know.

15%? I was accosted by a waitress in the Florida Keys for not leaving a 20%
tip, which would have been over £60 !

BTW has anyone spotted a clause charging a surcharge for taking
swimming costumes on a beach holiday?

No but in some french ski resorts they wont let you swim in the pool
in swimming shorts - they make you buy or rent(!) speedos.

And they make you buy a Swimming hat

In LA (and I'm sure other places) some of the hotels are charging or at
least don't pay the doormen to work there. In effect the doormen buy their
pitch and tipping is their only source of income. This makes them very
persistent. I hate it but the hotels will do anything to lower the apparent
cost of their rooms. Many people have commented that they will soon give
away the rooms free and recover their costs through the phone, TV etc
charges.

I've noticed in the brochures references to a couple of 'clothing optional'
swimming pools (Swiss I think) where a swimming cap is the only compulsory
item of clothing, what's that all about.
