Default clothing for multi-day touring

Are there any tricks for staying warm AND dry during multi-day ski
touring in the mountains with a backpack, when it's snowing? No matter
how I dress I am either cold, or I am drenched in sweat. So I have to
spend my warmth at night drying my day clothing in my sleeping
bag. This is for High Sierra weather (near freezing, snowy and windy
during the day, 10-20F at night, 8000+ feet). I wear a shell in the
snowy weather, but the snow melts once it touches the shell, and I am
wet outside from the snow, and wet inside from the sweat. My backpacks
are usually 50-60 lbs.

Gore-tex works and thermals for me. Not much you can do about your back
where it is in contact with your back.
