At Jay Peak there is an expert trail named "Derrick Hotshot". It is
named for Dave Derrick, a promising young skier who was killed in a
traffic accident on the way from his home in Newport to ski at Jay
Peak.

I just stumbled across an online copy of the Newport High School
yearbook from 1966. Derrick's photo is on page 25.

Included in his accomplishments listing is "Ski Team 1,2,3,4"

I remember him from ski-bus days at Jay Peak. One year he had a
racing crash and one of his ankles ended up in a cast, so he skied the
rest of the year on one ski. He didn't race any more that year, but
on one ski he could easily beat the local ski rats on two.

Also on page 42, athletic honors, with the caption "National Ski
Team", next to the All-State football players.

And action shot at Stowe on p. 79, wearing bib #1. Check out the lace-
up boots and what look like long-thongs wrapped around them.

Good stuff - sometimes ski areas don't promote their own history.
