Japan skiing
Anyone familiar with skiing in Japan? Specifically I was wondering how
Kagura ski resort (or Naeba) compare with say Tahoe's Heavenly or Colorado's Vail or Keystone (I know all 3 of these are quite different but just as points of comparison). I am looking to ski in Japan this weekend and want to hit the right slopes (I'm sure it will be hard to measure up to Vail for any of these resorts) Seems Kagura has a 1200m base to peak difference (3600 feet seems on par with the better US resorts). Thanks in advance, Ash |

Thanks in advance, Ash I haven't been to Naeba, I have been to Shiga Kogen and Hakuba on Honshu. Personally if you want to find the best place to ski in Japan, go to Niseko in Hokkaido. Most of ski areas in Japan, are blue cruiser heavens like Vail. It gets really boring very fast, Niseko isn't much different in terrain, but one goes there for the snow, it is very much like XXXX/LCC/BCC snow wise. Niseko besides the main giant ski areas in Japan are like Vail and Heavenly in terrain, besides the Niseko ski area is enormous. Another good thing about Niseko is Yotei San, (Mount Yotei) which one can hike for their turns, get away from the boring blue cruisers and 3/4 of the skier caring about style and technique, rather than trying to cheat death by tumbling down an icy couloir. The only people I saw go out of bounds or hike for their turns when I was there were snow boarders. The onsens are very much a treat... |
