I already know the answer and find it hilarious that (s)he accuses others of having a closed mind and believing that only (s)he knows the answers. |

"Sven Golly" wrote in message ... "foot2foot" wrote in : //MEGA SNIP OF DRIVEL// I'm looking right at the white gore texish layer in between the shell and the mesh liner. Few years old Columbia. Looks just like the same Cool. You can tell what the WPB layer is made of by looking at it. I don't necessarily care what it's made of. I'm saying that the visible middle layer is a way that can help to tell more about clothing than if you didn't know about it. I'm in awe. It's good you're using Columbia as an example too. You are the one that brought Columbia in. That will always impress those that really know technical fabrics and construction. I'm not out to impress anyone. I'm trying to help the poster with his question in a simple, practical, hopefully useful way. You want to go on with all this stuff you have for whatever reason, but you haven't given any useful advice to the poster. None that I saw anyway. You've given him nothing he can use. Propaganda from a manufacturer, and some guy that tried four coats and has his own opinion. There're a lot of good brands of jacket you know. I personally disagree with this guy. There's a world of difference between a gore tex coat, and a rubber coat, and a nylon coat with no membrane. This guy says that the gore tex does nothing. I know this is not the case. My own experience tells me. These membranes make a huge difference. He quotes some other guy that says gore tex is in the middle. This is not consumer reports you quoted. Yea, you'd think he'd probably know something given the refs, but where is the data? Is the fellow even quoted correctly? I'm *still* going to suggest to the poster that he look for clothing with an obvious, evident middle layer of water proof breathable whatever you may call it, I and the people that make them call them membranes, (did you notice your own source called gore tex a membrane?) everyone I've ever seen is white. I've had good luck with gore tex, helly tech, hydro vent, and I do have an old Columbia I recall as being not all that bad. If it's nothing but a plain nylon shell and lining with maybe some spray coating, but no middle layer, it's not enough. But, as some people above actually did manage to contribute, if the conditions are such that your clothes aren't getting soaked or wet, such clothing could be more disadvantage than help, but so what? So, you just wear your sweater or fleece or something We're talking Vail or Aspen, not antarctica or Everest. What you're going on about, Sven, *doesn't matter* for this poster. You might want to look up Columbia's own fabric descriptions sometime. See if they volunteer any info other than marketing. And that white looking layer? Could be anything from spray polyurethane to bonded film. Maybe it's your left over deodorant. I don't care. It *doesn't matter* for this poster. He wanted some simple, useful advice. You're just rambling. To be quite honest, if I wanted down to earth, simple useful, sensible advice on the best bargain on ski/winter clothing, I'm not sure I'd want to talk to you, you seem to be a little too close to the sales aspect of the industry Har. And here I thought you were nothing more than a Columbia shill. http://fray.slate.com/id/2085417 Good luck Foot. This thread's over for me. You've managed to take tedium to a whole new level. You were the source of this whole thing. I talked about membranes vs. coatings, and you piped in "I think you mean laminate I think you mean laminate." Well, I didn't. Then you proceeded to prove that there *is* no standard terminology in the industry and even said so yourself. Then you duck out of the thread with an "I'm so superior" remark. You did I guess, manage to prove that there *may* be some fairly new "coatings", that *could* be as good as what have been called over the years "membranes" *by the people who make the clothes*. To me, someone that says there's no difference between gore tex and a rubber coat, or the same and plain nylon, well, that's just ridiculous. There's plenty of difference. Good luck to you Sven. |

You want to go on with all this stuff you have for whatever reason, but you haven't given any useful advice to the poster. None that I saw anyway. Well, foot, honestly, you're not given to seeing the usefulness of anyone else's advice, unless what they're advising is, "Listen to foot2foot and do everything he says." If you truly want to help people, this is not a helpful reaction. |

"foot2foot" wrote in message I'm not out to impress anyone. Sure you are. I'm trying to help the poster with his question in a simple, practical, hopefully useful way. If that were the case you would learn how to get to the point in less then a thousand words. My bad. you don't get to THE point. you always get distracted while trying to impress. |
