Default Kitzbuhel during the Hahnenkamm race

I am trying to plan our annual 2 week skiing holiday in January.

One option is Kitzbuhel which unfortunately is low and does not have the best of
snow records according to the SCGB site.

If we go on the 17th of January the 1st week would overlap with the Hahnenkamm
race, whilst it would be fun to see this
would the slopes be overcrowded by visitors?

Can ski down the course during the following week?

I have to admit I never been to Kitzbuhel, but from my experience in
other resorts I'd say you will probably have the slopes to yourself.
Your main difficulty will be getting accomodation at that time, but if
you can find a place to stay the skiing should be fine. Some runs may
be closed off for training, but it will almost certainly just be the
Hennekham (sp?), I don't think they would clsoe anywhere else. I think
you can ski the course once the racing is over (whether you'd want to
is a different matter). Note that the slalom is on the same run as the
DH, usually the day after I think.

I've been lucky enough to be in Val d'Isere during the Olympics and
World Cup races. During the Olympic races the moutains were deserted
whilst everyone watched the racing (and during the Olympics I even got
to ski the world cup course whilst it was closed off to the public,
which was fantastic). In St Anton during the mens DH the slopes were
slightly quieter during the racing.

HTH,
Steve

We went many years ago, outside the race week.

We used to get the 8.30 cable-car to the top - apart from us there were
just restaurant supplies as there were no other lifts open that early,
but ur kids were small then and we could play with them for an hour and
then my wife would come down in the cable car with them in time for
their 10 AM ski school.

Meanwhile I came down the Hannenkam - a few of the steeper bits were
roped off for whatever reason, so you had to go round those, but I was
putting lots of turns in to keep my speed down to stay in control, so
even going non-stop flat-out (for me) it took about 9 minutes to get to
the bottom. I reckon that with my current skill levels and weight, on a
closed course with safety netting (but not iced) I could probably halve
that time, but that's still more than twice the time the racers take !

We didn't enjoy the holiday much - too low, lots of queues for lifts,
not well-connected, although it's very pretty and a nice village. Some
of this may have changed, but we've never been back.
