Default Gold! World Jr Biathlon

Gold for Canadian Junior National Team!

At the World Junior Biathlon Championships in
Haute-Maurienne, France on Tuesday, 27, Jan, 2004
in the 7.5km sprint race Jean-Philippe Le Guellec
won the Gold medal!

This is really a great result! :-)

LeGuellec had a really good race the with the 12.5km
Individual on Sunday where he placed fourth. One more
target hit and he would have had the Gold there too.
Very close and exciting.

I think this is the best result at W.Jr's for Canada
since Myriam Bedard was a Junior. Perhaps even N.A.?

Great results! Especially considering the adverse conditions he and all
other canadian biathletes have to endure.

There was an interesting article last year on the canadian biathlon website:
"Canadian biathletes are currently struggling with significant funding cuts
from the COC. Due to Biathlon Canada's lack of recent international success,
the COC has already cut its support by 50 percent for the current
quadrennial ending in 2004 to about $135,000. Another 50 percent cut is
expected in the next quadrennial leading up to the 2010 Winter Games which
may well take place in Canada".
"To make matters worse, the Canadian Sport Centre - Calgary, which also
receives funding support by both the COC and Sport Canada, has recently cut
off all support (coaching, sport medicine and sport science) to members of
the national biathlon team and CODA has reduced it's support to the same
athletes by 60 percent".

I wonder if the selection of Vancouver for the 2010 Olympic Games and these
results will change anything?

I hope Vancouver 2010 will help.
The Olympic gold medals that Myriam Bedard won
expire this year (from what I understand) for the
additional points they provide in the funding formula.
Six years from now LeGuellec should be in great form
for Vancouver.
