someone please tell me how teichmann put 24 seconds on bauer and 28
seconds on angerer in the last 3.2km?!

wow. must be nice to cruise through the first 2/3 of a race knowing
you have that kind of finishing kick.

Those would be quite a trick, but add 10 seconds to the figures; e.g.,
from 8 seconds down on Angerer at 10k to 30 up, and from 9 down to 24
up on Bauer. I wonder if kickwax or something in the conditions was
much of the difference. Freeman went from 27 secs down at 5k (25th) to
2:23 at the finish.

More along the same lines from Andy Newell:

(An aside: skiers' blogs are pretty great sources of information. If
only I read German.)

Here's your answer Phil (from the Freeman blog by Zach):

"..Bad skis it was. Kris double-poled 15K. Things were dialed and
looking good. Skis were waxed (with klister). Then it started to snow a
little bit. Then the sun peaked back out. Then it started to snow hard
- dump down buckets. The skis were instantly iced up and going nowhere.
So, minutes before the start, all the wax came off, and some untested
hardwax was put on in a hurry.

Kris was happy for the first K of relatively flat...Then the climbing
started and he had no kick. Zero. So he double-poled..." Repeat that
twice and he died.

The changing conditions must have affected most everyone at some
point, but why with a late start time Freeman had such a different
wax experience than the others has to be worked out.

At the end of the WCSN video, Teichmann is interviewed in English and
said the team arrived the day before and didn't know what to expect
being at altitude. So he started slowly and then it kicked in on the
third lap. Kuitunen says she took the same approach.
