Default more "universal" powder board

I typically ski and ride 50 or so days a year and ride deep powder
easily
on
a 160 cm board. I see very few riders of any merit riding boards over

168
at any weight and super long boards languish in the shops because no-one
wants them.

My experience has been that most longboard fans are hard booters... myself
included. More often that not hardbooters are on something longer than

168.
Many hardbooters use soft boots in powder, and are often on something

longer
than 168 - everything from big Customs and Fastbacks to swallowtails to
Tanker 200s.

Although I should admit... out of my current quiver, my shortest board is
probably my easiest to ride in powder. This doesn't surprise me because I
estimate that it also has the most surface area, it's a lot wider than the
rest. I don't have the time or energy to measure and calculate the exact
surface areas of all my boards, but I'll estimate my simply taking length *
waist width:

Donek Wide 161: 161 * 26 = 4186 cm^2
Donek Incline 168: 168 * 24 = 4032 cm^2
Donek Axis 172: 172 * 21.5 = 3698 cm^2
Coiler PR 184: 184 * 18.5 = 3404 cm^2

Yeah the estimate has some error in it but you get the picture.

I do intend to get something more powder oriented... I have my eye on the
OSin 4807 178 - readily available new on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WD1V

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WD1V

The second link is more expensive, however I list it because I personally
know two folks who bought boards from this seller and had good experiences.

Because the board is faster and less maneuverable? A shorter board or
one with more sidecut would presumably enable you to maneuver better
at the 'natural' speed of the board.

Sure I could do that... but I'm fishing for details from Phil on riding
longer boards in trees

Well, I'm leaning towards Prior Khyber. There is a 165 version, which seams
perfect for me. I've always thought Fish was too "extreme" for me, I don't want
to be that much back on my board and the longest Fish ia 160, very hard to find
and still seams too short. Khyber 165 is more of a "normal" board, with
just a wide nose
and more floatation than my Shogun 166. The stand is pushed backwards,
but not as much as Fish. As a longer board (than Fish), I shouldn't
have problems on flats
as other reported with their Fish boards. I'll give it a shot.
And those who are trying to tell me I don't need a powder board, apparently
have never seen real powder. I wish you came to Mammoth on Jan 1st,
when chair 9
opened after two weeks of dump and there was more than 6 feet of pure powder.
I wish I saw you there on your short board digging yourself out for an hour.
And yes, Mammoth have those kind of conditions quite often, it's not
just for "one day".

I've ridden Mammoth, Snowbird, Kirkwood and Squaw in waiste deep powder with
158 and 160 boards. Never a problem here.

I've never been in 6 feet of bottomless powder, but I have been in 3 feet
and gotten stuck many times. what a bummer that is!

Here at Hood, you can easily have 3 feet of fluff even with a 10 inch storm,
'cause it all gets blown from the ridges into the bowls. Not the longest
of powder runs, but a blast nonetheless. And it happens quite often.

I wouldn't buy that tank but it looks like an excellent board.

It does look like a nice board! And it's right around the corner from me!
That's just a big ol' freeride board, I think I want a pin-tail (e.g. Fish,
Kyhber), fish-tail (e.g. 4807), or swallowtail (e.g. Pow stick) more.
